ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT INTERN
Incumbent serves on a full-time basis for 12-weeks during the 2026 summer session for the City Engineering Department.
DUTIES
- Scans, copies, and documents information for the department as necessary.
- Assists in survey and field data collection.
- Assists in erosion control and field construction inspections.
- Completes small engineering investigations, evaluations, and designs.
- If qualified, progresses the completion of sidewalk, curb ramp, drainage, and/or paving projects using engineering equations and Microsoft Office products.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Incumbent must be actively seeking a college degree in civil engineering, construction management, mechanical engineering, or other related field.
- Incumbent must possess a knowledge of municipal operations and departmental responsibilities.
- Incumbent must having a working knowledge of the Office 360 software suite.
- Experience in field data collection or CAD would be considered a plus.
- Incumbent must possess personal skills in order to effectively communicate with the Department.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
Incumbent must be able to coordinate multiple tasks during the workday and support the fulltime staff throughout the day. Incumbent must be able to identify problems and communicate those problems immediately to a manager. Delays in decision making or negligence in addressing change can result in extensive monetary or legal cost to the City. During the inspections, incumbent must use sound judgment that solves problems at the most efficient cost to the City.
RESPONSIBILITY
Incumbent must mentally evaluate each decision made with regard to its impact on the City of Evansville. Conversations and decisions regarding citizen calls, field safety, inspection integrity, sample integrity, and interaction with others can all have negative consequences if not handled correctly. Incumbent's work is reviewed for soundness of judgment and effectiveness in reaching the required goal.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS
Incumbent works with the Assistant City Engineer, other employees, and independent contractors to perform field inspections, carry out policies, and maintain coordination.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Incumbent works inside and outside in normal weather changes. Work requires walking and climbing about in various terrains, in ditches, streams, and construction sites.
