Data Science & Engineering Summer 2026 Intern
Hybrid opportunity based in our Evanston, IL office. Join UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) for a 3‑month internship to gain hands‑on experience in a non‑profit safety standards environment, contribute to meaningful projects, and develop valuable research and analysis skills.

What You’ll Learn And Achieve
:
- Assist with standards and engagement projects related to our mission and goals, applying NLP to automate document review, data collection, and data analysis.
- Explore and prototype applications to automate technical workflows, improve searchability across our standards libraries, and analyze unstructured data for safety insights.
- Help collect and organize data using qualitative and quantitative scientific methods; analyze data to draw meaningful insights and trends.
- Support in creating reports, presentations, and visualizations summarizing technical findings; prepare materials for internal and external presentations.
- Work closely with the data science & engineering team and other departments to gather information, share safety science insights, and contribute to collaborative standards development projects.
- Assist in the coordination of standards development projects, organize, and maintain project documentation, including tracking progress and ensuring tasks are completed on time.
- Stay current with relevant literature, trends, and developments in the field to contribute valuable safety science insights to ongoing projects.
- Perform administrative duties as needed, including data entry, scheduling, and coordination of meetings (depending on role and function).

- Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., Excel, SPSS, R).
- Familiarity with structured databases (e.g., SQL) and unstructured databases (e.g., Elasticsearch) for data retrieval and management.

- An eagerness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges.
Professional Education And Experience Requirements For The Role Include
:
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or advanced degree program in a related field (e.g., engineering, data science, etc.).
- Experience using Python for data manipulation and analysis (e.g., Pandas, Num Py) is preferred.
- Strong interest in the non‑profit sector and research related to safety, social or environmental issues.
