The Journalism and Media Relations Intern will gain valuable insight into the media operations of a professional sports team and play a critical role in supporting the Chicago Union's communication and public relations. This individual will help enhance our brand's visibility through press outreach, media relations, and content creation.
The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining excellent communication and organizational skills. They must take initiative independently, manage ambiguity, and embody the vision, mission, and core values of the Chicago Union.
Responsibilities:
- Produce articles, press announcements, and other written content for distribution to media partners and digital platforms.
- Assist with media operations at designated events, including home games, practices, youth clinics, and other events as necessary.
- Build and strengthen relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets to generate and facilitate coverage for the Chicago Union.
- Serve as a liaison between the team and media, coordinating interviews and press opportunities.
- Conceptualize and execute stories that highlight team activities, player profiles, and organizational milestones.
- Support the social media team in generating content that aligns with the Union's communication goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the team.
Qualifications:
- Strong writing skills, with experience in creating press releases, media alerts, and editorial content.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with a proven ability to work with media outlets.
- Experience with digital media platforms and social media management.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to take initiative.
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license.
- Must reside in the Chicagoland area and be able to attend all Union home games and media events.
- Currently working towards or have graduated with a degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
- Prior experience in media relations, PR, or sports journalism is preferred.
- Knowledge and enthusiasm for professional sports, particularly ultimate frisbee.
