Certified Medical Assistant; CMA​/RMA

Overview

Certified Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.

• Educational Requirements:
  
  H.S. Diploma/GED
• Certification & Licensure Requirements: CMA from one of the following bodies: NHA, NAHP, AAMA, NCCT, or AAH (upon hire); or RMA from AMT or ARMA (upon hire). ARMA registry requires successful completion of a CMA/RMA program OR Carle/Parkland CMA Academy.
• Experience:
  
  CMA experience preferred

• Rooming patients: collecting pertinent information regarding chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation upon arrival for a patient visit.
• Telephone interactions: handling necessary telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and/or other health care facilities as directed.
• Administrative tasks: patient check-in/check-out, prior authorizations, scheduling appointments, verification of benefits, and coordination of referrals and testing.
• Office procedures as directed and per department competencies.
• Perform procedures as directed (e.g., urine catheterizations, bladder scanning, suture/staple removal, casting, TB test interpretation guidance, and directing to appropriate department nurse as needed).
• Provide written instructions regarding procedures, medications, or follow-up at the direction of the provider.
• Access and share condition-specific education from approved sources as directed; retrieve education materials per provider orders.
• Administer medications per provider orders; assist with prescription refills per department protocols.
• Call medications into pharmacies, notify patients of refills, and document actions in the EMR per provider orders.
• Maintain department competencies related to point-of-care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training.
• Perform all duties of MA staff; complete RX refills and normal lab results from RN worklist; obtain detailed patient medical histories at intake appointments; administer vaccines and medications under ordering providers.
• Demonstrate customer service excellence, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
