LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I/II – PUBLIC HEALTH

OVERVIEWThis role supports the Public Health Laboratory by performing routine laboratory procedures, specimen preparation, and quality control while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Clean and sterilize glassware and prepare laboratory media.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and perform quality control of apparatus.
- Process clinical and environmental specimens for testing, including microbiological and chemical examinations.
- Log specimens, enter data, and coordinate follow‑up of results in the laboratory information management system.
- Perform office support duties, including phone answering, data entry, filing, and courier duties to deliver reports and collect specimens.
- High school diploma or equivalent plus college‑level coursework in biology, chemistry, or a related laboratory field.
- One year of experience in an environmental, clinical, or public health laboratory (Laboratory Technician I) and one year of experience conducting sample collection and testing (Laboratory Technician II). Advancement from I to II is based on demonstrated competence.
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to drive to local clinics and hospitals.
- Ability to use laboratory equipment, prepare culture media, and maintain accurate records.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and customer‑service orientation.
- Frequent standing, walking, and use of laboratory and office equipment.
- Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds with proper equipment.
- Work in a laboratory environment with moderate noise, controlled temperature, and exposure to blood borne pathogens and hazardous waste.
