NOW CFO is proud to partner with Redwood Community Action Agency (RCAA) in the search for a Controller to lead and elevate the organization’s accounting and financial operations.
This is a high-impact leadership role within a long-standing nonprofit serving Humboldt County since 1980. RCAA supports critical programs focused on housing stability, energy assistance, youth services, food security, and environmental stewardship — and strong financial leadership is essential to sustaining that impact.
We are seeking a strategic, hands-on accounting leader who can own the integrity of the financial function, guide compliance in a complex grant-funded environment, and serve as a trusted financial partner to executive leadership and the Board.

About the RoleAs Controller, you will serve as the organization’s senior accounting authority, responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of all financial reporting and compliance functions. You will oversee accounting operations, ensure adherence to GAAP and federal/state grant regulations, and strengthen internal controls across a multi-program structure.
This role combines technical accounting expertise, audit leadership, grant compliance oversight, and cross-functional collaboration. You will partner closely with executive leadership to provide financial insights that support sound decision-making and long-term sustainability.
Compensation: $120,000–$130,000
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, financial reporting, and compliance
Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors and lead all audit preparation, including Single Audit coordination where applicable
Oversee grant accounting, fund accounting, and cost allocation across multiple funding streams
Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal and state grant requirements, and nonprofit regulatory standards
Prepare and present financial statements, analysis, and insights to executive leadership and the Board of Directors
Strengthen and maintain internal controls, policies, and accounting procedures
Partner with program leaders to support budget oversight, forecasting, and financial modeling
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering accountability and professional development
Drive process improvements to increase efficiency, transparency, and financial visibility across the organization
What We’re Looking For3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within nonprofit or other multi-funding-source environments
Strong background in grant accounting and fund accounting
Experience leading external audits, including preparation and coordination
Working knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements
Experience with MIP (Abila) or comparable ERP/accounting systems
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Demonstrated leadership experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff
Preferred QualificationsExperience with Single Audit requirements
Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership and boards
Exposure to cost allocation methodologies and multi-program financial structures
CPA designation (preferred but not required)
