Job Description & How to Apply Below

NOW CFO is proud to partner with Redwood Community Action Agency (RCAA) in the search for a Controller to lead and elevate the organization’s accounting and financial operations.

This is a high-impact leadership role within a long-standing nonprofit serving Humboldt County since 1980. RCAA supports critical programs focused on housing stability, energy assistance, youth services, food security, and environmental stewardship — and strong financial leadership is essential to sustaining that impact.

We are seeking a strategic, hands-on accounting leader who can own the integrity of the financial function, guide compliance in a complex grant-funded environment, and serve as a trusted financial partner to executive leadership and the Board.

We welcome local candidates as well as professionals open to relocation who are excited about supporting a mission-driven organization in Humboldt County.

About the Role

As Controller, you will serve as the organization’s senior accounting authority, responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of all financial reporting and compliance functions. You will oversee accounting operations, ensure adherence to GAAP and federal/state grant regulations, and strengthen internal controls across a multi-program structure.

This role combines technical accounting expertise, audit leadership, grant compliance oversight, and cross-functional collaboration. You will partner closely with executive leadership to provide financial insights that support sound decision-making and long-term sustainability.

Compensation: $120,000–$130,000

Key Responsibilities

Lead and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, financial reporting, and compliance

Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors and lead all audit preparation, including Single Audit coordination where applicable

Oversee grant accounting, fund accounting, and cost allocation across multiple funding streams

Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal and state grant requirements, and nonprofit regulatory standards

Prepare and present financial statements, analysis, and insights to executive leadership and the Board of Directors

Strengthen and maintain internal controls, policies, and accounting procedures

Partner with program leaders to support budget oversight, forecasting, and financial modeling

Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering accountability and professional development

Drive process improvements to increase efficiency, transparency, and financial visibility across the organization

What We’re Looking For

3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within nonprofit or other multi-funding-source environments

Strong background in grant accounting and fund accounting

Experience leading external audits, including preparation and coordination

Working knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements

Experience with MIP (Abila) or comparable ERP/accounting systems

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

Demonstrated leadership experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Single Audit requirements

Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership and boards

Exposure to cost allocation methodologies and multi-program financial structures

CPA designation (preferred but not required)

Culture & Mission

At RCAA, people come first — both within the organization and throughout the community. The team values collaboration, transparency, and integrity, and works together to deliver essential services across Humboldt County. As Controller, you will play a critical leadership role in ensuring the organization’s financial strength supports its mission for years to come.
