Role Overview

Seeking an experienced, hands‑on COBOL professional to serve as a technical lead and senior contributor within its IT organization. This role is ideal for a seasoned COBOL developer who enjoys mentoring others, guiding technical direction, and improving processes without stepping away from day‑to‑day development work.

The COBOL Technical Lead will work closely with other developers and business partners to support and enhance mission‑critical systems while helping guide the team through ongoing modernization efforts, including the transition from legacy files to SQL‑based architectures.

This is a player‑coach role, blending deep technical contribution with informal leadership, collaboration, and technical oversight.

Key Responsibilities Hands‑On Development & Technical Leadership
  • Serve as a senior, hands‑on developer supporting and enhancing existing COBOL applications
  • Design and develop new COBOL applications, processes, and procedures using both legacy and modernized approaches
  • Embed SQL statements within COBOL programs as legacy files are migrated to SQL tables
  • Develop new functionality leveraging SQL within COBOL‑based systems
System Ownership & Functional Leadership
  • Provide technical leadership for core business systems including:
    Parts inventory Customer data Invoicing Tax engine modules
  • Guide technical decisions related to design, architecture, and maintainability of these systems
Collaboration & Business Partnership
  • Partner with business stakeholders to validate application design, usability, and functional fit
  • Participate in design planning and technical reviews for new features and enhancements
  • Translate business requirements into clear technical solutions
Data Conversion & Modernization Efforts
  • Lead or actively participate in data conversions related to acquisitions, including A/R, parts, customers, and inventory
  • Provide technical oversight during complex migrations and integration efforts
Documentation, Quality & Process Improvement
  • Lead or contribute to requirements documentation, system design artifacts, and test plans
  • Ensure code, systems, and processes are clearly documented and kept up to date
  • Identify opportunities to improve development practices, documentation standards, and system efficiency
Mentorship & Team Support
  • Mentor and collaborate with peer programmers through code reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing
  • Act as a technical point of reference for COBOL‑related questions and best practices
  • Support team effectiveness without formal people‑management or HR responsibilities
Required Skills & Experience
  • Strong hands‑on experience with COBOL on HP Non Stop platforms
  • Experience developing and supporting online and batch COBOL applications
  • Proficiency with SQL, including embedding SQL within COBOL programs
  • Familiarity with SQLXpress and HTML
  • Solid understanding of:
    Software development lifecycle (SDLC) System and data analysis Debugging, testing, and troubleshooting practices
  • Strong documentation and technical communication skills
  • Ability to identify system requirements and recommend appropriate technical solutions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex issues efficiently
  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating within a team environment
  • Strong organizational and estimation skills, with the ability to meet defined timelines
Nice-to-Have Experience
  • Exposure to heavy equipment industry software or related business processes
  • Experience supporting modernization or legacy‑to‑SQL transitions
  • Background working in acquisition-driven or integration-heavy environments
