The Laboratory Analytical Specialist performs journey level laboratory analysis utilizing standard methodologies and procedures in an environmental laboratory. Work involves testing and analyzing samples of wastewater treatment plant and industrial wastewater, biosolids, stormwater, and ground water utilizing various analytical methods techniques and equipment.

Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm. Occasional holiday hours and on call overtime work is required.

Examples of Duties Performed – Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Performs a variety of specialized analytical procedures including chemical, microbiological, and instrumental analyses on a variety of samples using standardized methods, performance-based methods, and recognized analytical techniques.
- Performs assigned gravimetric, chemical or bacteriological analysis of pollutant parameters in wastewater, ground water, stormwater, biosolids, and soils according to established methods and QA/QC requirements; verifies that analytical level quality control criteria are met; verifies accuracy and completeness of data as required for compliance with appropriate regulations per EPA, State Agencies, and other regulatory bodies.
- Uses, calibrates, troubleshoots, and maintains a variety of scientific and laboratory analytical equipment and instruments.
- Performs daily routine care of, and periodic maintenance of, instruments as well as investigating, correcting and documenting complex analytical issues or problems with laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Follows chain of custody procedures, prepares and maintains detailed records and documentation of samples, tests analyses and procedures (SOPs); prepares reports and analyses sends notification of analytical results as required.
- Investigates and incorporates new analytical techniques and instrumental instrumentation techniques procedures.
- Performs and documents demonstration of capability and method detection limit studies.
- Coordinates duties with other Wastewater Division activities and personnel, City and external agencies, and/or vendors.
- Maintains a variety of written records, files, and spreadsheets; extracts data and develops reports; may compile and draft technical reports and trend analyses. Maintains files and records for internal, third-party, or State and Federal Audits.
- Operates a variety of computer hardware and software systems including instrument software and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Researches and evaluates processes and procedures; develops and drafts procedures and guidelines.
- Acquires knowledge through research or training about developments and analytical trends.
- May be assigned individually or as part of a project team; may participate or provide guidance in the area of expertise.
- Performs work in a manner that is consistent with safety policies and procedures, mitigates and corrects hazards, and performs safety inspections.
- Keeps equipment neat, clean and properly stored; maintains clean and sterile laboratory areas.
- May be assigned to committees in support of division, department, or City-wide activities or services.
- Performs limited sampling duties on holidays or emergency callback as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
