Overview

Certified Volunteer Ombudsmen (om
· buds·men / ˈȯm-,
-bədz-, -ˌmen) work as a team to advocate for the rights and dignity of residents who are elderly and disabled living in long-term care facilities. Ombudsmen investigate and resolve problems collegially until resident concerns are resolved. There are many facilities in need of a volunteer to advocate for residents living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult foster homes. Residents have no one to watch out for them or speak up when things go wrong;

call lights go unanswered, meals arrive cold or medications are given incorrectly.

Responsibilities
  • Advocate for residents in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and adult foster homes.
  • Investigate and resolve problems to ensure residents  rights, safety, and dignity are respected.
  • Work with residents and facility staff to address concerns and improve care where possible.
Qualifications
  • No prior expertise required — you just have to care.
  • Six-day online training will be scheduled for those who successfully complete the application process.
  • Volunteers receive local training and ongoing support in a team environment.

Mission

The mission of Oregon’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman program is to protect individual rights, enhance quality of life, improve care, and promote dignity for residents living in long-term care facilities. Ombudsmen do not make decisions for residents or act as their legal representative or provide care; it is our role to inform residents of their rights and assist in resolving concerns as needed.
