Overview
At National Grid Mechanical Electrical Fitters are responsible for maintaining a wide range of works on Substation plant and equipment. This work is predominately outdoors and sometimes at height on a mobile platform. You'll join an established team of fitters stripping down and rebuilding high voltage equipment, replacing worn/aged components. Maintenance includes HV circuit breakers, transformers, high speed on load tap changers and cable systems, plus all kinds of ancillary equipment such as DC battery systems, air compressors and generators.
This work includes installation of new equipment, refurbishment and maintenance of existing equipment, fault investigation and repair as well as routine condition monitoring.
- Strip down and rebuild high voltage equipment; maintain complex HV circuit breakers, transformers, high speed on load tap changers and cable systems; service ancillary equipment (DC battery systems, air compressors, generators).
- Install new equipment, refurbish and maintain existing equipment, conduct fault investigation and repair, and perform routine condition monitoring.
- Work outdoors and at height on occasions; operate in accordance with safety procedures and work specifications.
- A recognised apprenticeship in Mechanical/Electrical engineering OR an NVQ/Level 3 Mechanical/Electrical qualification with the relevant fitting experience is required.
- Demonstrable practical industrial engineering skills – installations, breakdown, repair and maintenance, fault finding, strip down and rebuild, working to safety procedures, problem solving and following work specifications to maintain equipment.
- A Full UK Driving Licence.
- A good level of computer literacy.
- Live within 30 minutes travel of Rayleigh SS11 8TZ

- High Voltage engineering experience.
- IOSH / NEBOSH.
- MEWP Licence.

Benefitsand Terms
- Starting package £45,137 pa including allowances.
- Paid overtime + Bonus (2025 - up to 4%), Company vehicle provided from home to work.
- 26 days holiday plus 8 statutory days;
Contribution to Pension up to 18% total. - Hours:
37 per week on average, Monday to Friday, days only (Winter 36 hrs, Summer 38 hrs; 4-day working pattern). - Training and personal development including a comprehensive plan; occasional stays away from home with allowances; some weekend work may be required; travel and mobility allowances apply.
