Overview

Presbyterian is seeking a preanesthesia nurse
. This RN plays a critical role in preparing patients for surgery by ensuring they are medically and emotionally ready for anesthesia
. These nurses conduct thorough preoperative assessments
, which include reviewing medical history, current medications, allergies, and previous anesthesia experiences. They educate patients about the anesthesia process, answer questions, and help alleviate anxiety. Preanesthesia nurses also collaborate closely with anesthesiologists and surgical teams to identify potential risks and ensure all necessary documentation and lab results are complete before the procedure. Their work helps promote patient safety and smooth surgical outcomes.

This position is eligible for the Northern New Mexico differential of $4.00 per hour. (This differential may be adjusted or discontinued based on business requirements.)

Responsibilities
  • Provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting individual patient needs, actions taken, and patient responses
  • Coordinates patient care through collaboration with the patient/family and healthcare team
  • Performs assessments per unit standards and documents findings appropriately
  • Initiates, utilizes, and documents protocols and standards of care
  • Administers medications and treatments as prescribed or per protocol, documenting according to policy
  • Identifies and meets patient and family learning and discharge needs throughout the care episode
  • Evaluates patient progression toward outcomes and documents accordingly
  • Responds competently in emergency situations
  • Delegates or assigns patient care tasks based on team members’ validated competencies
  • Supervises LPNs and non-licensed assistive personnel clinically
  • Provides leadership through communication and validation of patient care
  • Assists with procedures, treatments, and surgical techniques or delegates appropriately
  • Completes education and competency testing specific to patient population, age, and procedures
  • Demonstrates competency in required psychomotor skills
  • Assists in orienting new staff or students and serves as a resource and role model
  • Maintains professional responsibility for nursing standards and care structure
  • Incorporates organizational mission and values into caregiving
  • Supports shared governance and care delivery models
  • Assumes leadership roles such as relief charge nurse when needed
  • Meets professional requirements including:
    • Age-specific training and mandatory yearly in services (e.g., BLS, safety, infection control)
    • Participation in unit/department governance
    • Adherence to professional dress code and  display
    • Documentation of continuing education
    • Positive communication with patients, peers, and healthcare team
    • Participation in quality improvement activities
    • Reliable and punctual attendance
    • Completion of mandatory in services, competencies, and licensure requirements
    • Adherence to safety and equipment policies

  • ADN/BSN/MSN
  • NM State or Multistate License
