This is a skilled, hands-on position responsible for performing a wide range of construction, maintenance, and repair duties related to domestic water distribution systems, streets, and related public infrastructure. This role requires prior field experience and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
In addition to the duties of a Water Utilities Laborer I, the Water Utilities Laborer II:
Read and interpret water distribution maps and utility plans.
Assist in locating underground water, recycled water, sewer, and related infrastructure prior to excavation to prevent damage to facilities.
Perform repairs to water mains, service lines, water meters, installation of new water lines, and related appurtenances.
Assist in skilled street maintenance and construction, including repair and maintenance of curbs, gutters, sidewalks, streets, roadways, storm drains, pavement, and related facilities.
Maintain water quality standards during repairs to water distribution pipelines and appurtenances.
Properly utilize mandated disinfection and flushing techniques on newly installed or repaired distribution systems.
Perform fire hydrant maintenance and valve testing, including flushing and painting.
Set up and secure job sites, ensuring compliance with safety standards, including placement of cones, barricades, warning devices, and directing traffic at job sites.
Operate light, medium, and heavy-duty construction and maintenance equipment.
Train and assist lower-level staff in the safe operation of equipment and tools.
Serve as a competent person during excavations, traffic control, and related work as assigned.
Respond to emergency calls, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and unscheduled hours as required.
Perform manual labor such as shoveling gravel, asphalt, dirt, and debris in and out of trenches, wheelbarrows, and trucks; dig around live water lines.
Operate trucks for weekly trash collection and assist with landscape and vegetation maintenance as needed.
Remove graffiti from public property.
Qualifications:
1+ years of experience in construction, water utilities, public works, plumbing, pipe fitting, street maintenance, or related field work.
Experience working for a government organization or public-sector agency, a plus
Ability to operate construction and maintenance equipment; forklift certification preferred.
Commercial CA DL, such as a Class A and Class B license preferred
Knowledge of safe work practices, trench safety, and traffic control procedures.
Ability to read maps, follow technical instructions, and work independently or as part of a crew.
Valid California Driver's License required.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Must successfully pass a background check and drug screen.
