Job Summary and Qualifications

The Lactation Specialist demonstrates advanced breastfeeding knowledge and skills in the care of families and newborns. Each breastfeeding consultation requires specialized skills. The delivery of care is based on age‑appropriate criteria and considers the physical, psychosocial, cultural, safety, and learning needs of the family and newborn. The Lactation Specialist coordinates lactation services in the hospital, provides inpatient consultation and telephone follow‑up, and serves as a resource to medical and nursing staff.

Position Requirements
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration:
    Current licensure in the State of Colorado as a Registered Nurse, or current active multistate nursing licensure. Current BLS Certification through AHA or ARC within 30 days and NRP required within 120 days. IBCLC certification is preferred.
  • Education:

    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Completion of a certified lactation program.
  • Experience:

    Minimum 2–3 years clinical experience in perinatal nursing, including work with breastfeeding mothers and babies.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities:

    Demonstrates good organizational skills, provides safe and appropriate patient care within the Standards of Nursing Practice at SMC, and has knowledge of lactation anatomy and physiology, nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, management of breastfeeding problems, psychosocial aspects of lactation, treatment modalities, and the ability to incorporate these factors into the nursing process. Displays appropriate judgment and problem‑solving skills and communicates positively and professionally, both written and verbal, with all internal and external customers.
