The Korbel Ameri Corps Program provides opportunities for students enrolled at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs to serve their communities. Through their service, Korbel Ameri Corps members will support public service organizations improving food, housing, healthcare, employment, and economic stability among Denver residents. Korbel Ameri Corps members will acquire sector-specific knowledge and skills, preparing them for future careers in public service.
ServicePosition Summary
This position reports to the Economic Development Manager and is housed within the Community Development Department. The role will focus on implementing and advancing key actions identified in the 2022 Council-approved Economic Development Strategic Plan (EDSP).
The primary focus of the position is to develop and implement a strategy to increase representation within Economic Development Organizations (EDOs) and participation in economic development programs among historically underrepresented individuals and businesses. This work will emphasize identifying and engaging new partners that serve diverse and underrepresented populations, as well as expanding awareness of and access to existing grant and loan programs.
This EDSP action has not been comprehensively addressed since the plan’s adoption.
Secondary responsibilities will support EDSP actions related to workforce development. The position will assist in improving engagement with existing workforce programs offered by economic partners, including A/D Works!, with the goal of increasing employer participation and raising awareness of local career opportunities for residents. Specific tasks will include developing a workforce development ecosystem map, outlining a workforce navigation guide, and coordinating engagement opportunities with medium- and large-scale local employers.
The position may also provide supplemental support to the housing and food access fellowship programs on an as-needed basis.
Key activities may include:
- Researching and documenting EDOs and related organizations that currently offer programming aligned with EDSP priorities.
- Conducting outreach to EDOs and partner organizations to coordinate meetings, events, and relationship-building activities.
- Reviewing existing economic development programs to identify gaps, opportunities for improvement, and potential new programs that better serve underrepresented businesses.
- Supporting community engagement efforts, including developing presentation materials and coordinating outreach with relevant City departments.
- Receive a monthly stipend dependent on number of hours earned. For the 300-hour slot, receive $600 per month, for a total stipend of up to $3,000. For the 450-hour position, receive a monthly stipend of $900, for a total stipend of up to $4,500. The stipend is taxable and paid in equal increments every month throughout the term of service.
- Earn a Segal E education A award For the 300-hour position, earn up to $1,565.08 upon successful completion of the term service. For the 450-hour position, earn up to $1,956.35 upon successful completion of term of service. This federal education award may be used to pay educational expenses at eligible post-secondary institutions or to repay qualified students loans.
- Internship credit from the Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs for completing service.
