Job Summary

This position is scheduled to begin August 2026. The MCC Music and Dance Department is seeking a dynamic, passionate and experienced faculty member to provide leadership in teaching Music Theory courses (Theory, Sight Singing and Applied Composition Lessons). Additional course teaching assignments are dependent on the qualifications of the candidate and departmental needs. Teaching duties may require multiple instructional modalities (F2F, online, hybrid, etc.).

A successful candidate will work with the Music and Dance Faculty on developing a comprehensive vision for the department. The incumbent will also be a proactive contributor on matters of curriculum, standards, assessment, and accreditation. In addition to teaching responsibilities, providing service to the department and college community is required. Candidates must be adaptable, capable of working both independently and collaboratively, and ready to contribute to a range of interdisciplinary and institutional committees and initiatives.

Functions
  • Instructs a diverse population of students in classroom and lab settings
  • Develops written syllabi/course outlines and course materials; assesses student knowledge of subject matter and prepares and grades exams; maintains academic support hours to assist and advise students.
  • Engages in the academic life of the college by participating in district-wide and campus committees and activities.
  • Develops and enhances knowledge of subject matter taught and individual training skills required to remain current with new trends and developments in the field and to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, and/or workshops.
Minimum Qualifications

The Academic Teaching Fields require the following from an accredited college or university:

A Master’s degree or higher with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field or a Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field is required.

Desired Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree or higher in the discipline of Music Theory OR Master’s Degree in Music with no fewer than 18 credits in Music Theory.
  • Experience teaching music theory and composition at the undergraduate level.
  • Demonstrated experience in the recruitment, retention and advising of music students.
  • Demonstrated experience in music humanities lecture course instruction and/or expertise in a secondary area like piano.
  • Demonstrated advanced proficiency in a range of music technology, including digital media, or cutting-edge tools for interactive systems or generative AI
  • Demonstrated record of leadership in professional organizations, activity in building collaborative relationships with performers and colleagues, and/or demonstrated leadership in department and/or college committee work.
Special Working Conditions
  • Travel to campus during the interview/selection process will be at the candidate's own expense.
  • May travel or be assigned to any MCCCD location
