Position: Public Works Engineer Tech I- Inspections
## Compensation Range $29.30 - $38.10--##

Job Description Summary This is an entry level position responsible for construction inspection and materials testing. Work is reviewed for technical accuracy upon completion while non-routine tasks may be reviewed during the process by a supervisor.

Job Description
** Field Work - 35%
*** Assist with inspection, observations and documentation of various county construction projects.
* Conduct field material property tests and/or collect representative samples of aggregates, soils, asphalt, and concrete.
* Maintain and properly store valuable county equipment, tools, and materials.
* Communicate efficiently and concisely both verbally and in writing, including preparing reports, correspondence, and procedural documentation.
* Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of construction materials and methods in situations where limited standardization exists.
** Laboratory Work - 35%
*** Perform standardized and specialized work of substantial variety and complexity.
* Maintain accurate records.
* Interpret written and oral instructions accurately.
* Apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratio, and proportions to testing and analysis.
** Administrative - 15%
*** Utilize all Microsoft Office applications proficiently.
* Read, analyze, and interpret technical documents, professional journals, and governmental regulations.
* Maintain courteous and safe work practices while fostering effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors, and the public.
* Assist with tasks involving construction documents, agreements, design, testing, and maintenance.
* Assist with assignments requiring independent and individual contribution.
* Present information clearly through field logs, inspection reports, and construction documents to supervisor, engineers, managers, staff, contractors and elected officials.
* Apply engineering techniques to projects related to design, testing and maintenance.
** Other Duties as Assigned - 15%
*** Assist with snow desk operations and be available for alternating weekly on-call duties, fall through spring, as assigned.
* Support emergency responses and be available to respond to and work extraordinary hours.
* Additional overtime duties may be required.
* Follow all County policies, procedures, and the Weld County Code of Conduct including confidentially and information release guidelines.
* Duties and time allocations may vary depending on operational needs.

Required Qualifications
** Required Education
*** High school diploma/GED And
* Associates degree Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Engineering/Construction Management field.
** Or*
* * Bachelor’s degree with job knowledge may be substituted for prior experience.
** Required Work Experience
*** Two years’ experience in a civil construction or engineering work environment. Post high school education may be substituted for work experience if relevant to the field.
** Licenses and Certifications
*** Valid regular Colorado driver’s license by the employment start date and maintain a valid license for the duration of employment.
* Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) Excavation and Embankment Inspection certification within two years required.
* American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field Technician Grade I within two years required.
* Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association (CAPA) Asphalt Laydown Level A within two years required.
* Additional certifications may be required based on division needs.
* Ability to be MSHA certified.
** Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

** Understanding of geotechnical testing and construction materials. Ability to read and interpret construction plans. Familiarity with all phases of construction including inspection, soils, asphalt, concrete, utilities, traffic control and reclamation. Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g. County Code, CDOT specifications AASHTO). Candidate must pass background check prior to employment start date.
