Overview

Introduction:
Are you a manufacturing professional in Connecticut who is passionate about educating the future of the field and transforming the lives of our incarcerated population? The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) Unified School District #1 is seeking an Advanced Manufacturing Instructor (Vocational Instructor) to teach knowledge and skills required by industry through applied learning and work-based experiences that prepare students for careers in a high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand field.

The program also includes personal development, leadership and employability skills as part of the curriculum. The course sequence is part of a rigorous program of study with sufficient technical challenge to meet state and industry standards.

We are looking for candidates who possess a high school diploma or equivalency and eight (8) years of employment and/or teaching experience in advanced manufacturing practices. See Minimum and Preferred Qualifications for details.

Position Highlights
  • SCHEDULE:

    first-shift, full-time (35 hours per week), Monday through Friday
  • ACADEMIC CALENDAR: USD #1 follows a 12-month calendar with 222 school days per year
  • LOCATION:

    Robinson Correctional Institution, Enfield, CT
  • TRAINING:
    Selected candidates may be required to present a lesson plan during interview. Hirees attend a 14-week training at the CT DOC Training Academy. More details are in the Selection Plan of the job bulletin.
Education

New state employees start at Step 1 of the pay plan according to the highest level of education. Starting salary is non-negotiable. Salary details (P-3B T1-T4 35 Hour Pay Plan):

  • Bachelor's Degree:
    Step 1 $ 68,792;
    Step 11-14 (Maximum) $104,174
  • Master's Degree:
    Step 1 $ 72,241;
    Step 11-14 (Maximum) $122,335
  • 6th Year:
    Step 1 $ 77,294;
    Step 14 (Maximum) $130,898

Your Role

As a Vocational Instructor with the DOC, you will be responsible for:

  • Prioritizing safety and security for staff, victims, citizens, and offenders
  • Teaching curricula across early intervention, elementary, secondary, and special subject areas
  • Developing educational plans for individuals and groups
  • Setting goals and evaluating student progress
  • Participating in planning team meetings and case reviews
  • Conferencing with parents or officials regarding student performance
  • Collaborating with professionals in ancillary educational roles
  • Maintaining student records and writing reports
  • Modeling positive teaching practices
  • Refer to class specifications for more details
Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who possess:

  • A degree in Machine Tool Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Industry experience in Manual Machining, CNC Machining, or Blueprint Reading
  • Working knowledge of CNC controls
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to students of varying skill levels
  • Understanding of different learning styles and ability to tailor instruction
  • Ability to work with multiple disciplines throughout the day
  • Working knowledge of classroom routines and discipline
  • Outstanding personal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow the school schedule, with understanding that it may change
Notes

This position may require hazardous-duty training. Completion of training includes classroom and hands-on components and exams.
