Assistant Highways Engineer

Position: Assistant Highways Engineer (Contract)
Location: Enfield Town

Our client, a prominent authority in North London, is seeking a dedicated Highways Engineer on a contract basis to join their Design and Construction team. This role involves delivering the design and construction of new schemes within the highways discipline.

As an Assistant Engineer, you will support the delivery of a broad range of highways and infrastructure projects from inception to completion. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, you will contribute specialist technical skills across inspections, feasibility work, design development, site supervision, project management, contract administration and financial control.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in the delivery of highways projects from feasibility through to completion.
Carry out inspections, surveys, and technical assessments.
Support the development of feasibility and options studies.
Assist in preparing designs, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
Provide on-site supervision, including ensuring contractor compliance with specifications.
Support project management and contract administration activities.
Monitor budgets for small projects or programmes (up to approx. £0.5m) under Principal Engineer guidance.
Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and support internal approvals.
Collaborate with senior officers to ensure high‑quality technical outcomes.

Job Requirements:

Is technically curious and eager to develop their engineering skills.
Can work independently and exercise sound judgement within their grade.
Can travel to and work on construction sites, including potentially high‑risk environments (full training provided).
Is comfortable making decisions under pressure and working flexibly, including occasional out‑of‑hours work to support project delivery.
