Overview
The Ohio Association of Foodbanks (OAF) represents Ohio's 12 Feeding America foodbanks and their 3,600 member hunger relief programs, serving food insecure Ohioans in all 88 counties. OAF will host 25 Ameri Corps members serving at 9 host sites throughout Ohio. Deploying Ameri Corps direct service members at local and regional hunger relief agencies will support a coordinated statewide effort to improve health by getting healthy food into the homes of food insecure Ohioans.
Summer positions will focus on promoting fresh produce among youth populations. This position is located Our F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Fathers and Mothers Involving Local Youth). Our agency develops programs to empower struggling families and youth to improve their quality of life. We develop programs for public schools, libraries, and even barber shops to grow appetites for learning. We sponsor science contests and community gardens that teach people of any age how to grow food and invent something useful.
We also make sure they have healthy food for their families through our Summer Food Program and our mobile market delivery service. All these activities bring people to us to learn about opportunities to improve their own future.
This Ameri Corps position promotes youth nutrition, garden education, and community engagement. The member administers weekly healthy snack demonstrations using seasonal produce, highlighting nutritional benefits and sharing creative ways for youth to try fruits and vegetables. Produce grown in the community garden is delivered to the Summer Food Program site in Elyria to support daily meal preparation for participants. The member maintains the Oberlin community garden by planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting crops while leading garden tours for youth and community members.
These tours provide hands‑on education about growing food, local food systems, and the importance of healthy, sustainable eating. Secondary activities support broader program initiatives and community outreach to enhance youth access to fresh, nutritious foods.
