POSITION SUMMARYThe Emergency Room Tech assists and supports the nursing and medical staff of the Emergency Department, performing patient care and environmental tasks, managing supplies and equipment to ensure a patient‑focused, cost‑effective operation of the department. The Emergency Room Tech will also assist the RN with performing education and observing chemical tests on patients’ or control specimens, recording appropriate results, and maintaining all laboratory equipment correctly.
ESSENTIALDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists the RNs and physicians in providing technical care of the patients by: documenting vital signs, performing phlebotomy and IV starts, performing EKGs, transporting patients, placing patients on cardiac and vital sign monitors, performing Point of Care Testing, performing wound care, and obtaining lab specimens and documenting all care/procedures provided.
- Performs urine drug screens and/or breathalyzer tests, as required or trained.
- Assists the physician with physical exams, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Applies a variety of orthopedic splints and fits patients for crutches.
- Ensures that patient care areas, storage rooms, and equipment are clean and maintained.
- Cleans equipment and workspace (including patient rooms, restrooms, waiting room, and nurse’s station).
- Ensures sufficient lab supplies, linens, stock room supplies.
- Assists with unloading supplies into Emergency Center.
- Performs POC and QC lab testing.
- Performs daily checks of ABC equipment in each room.
- Maintains temperature logs in Pharmacy and Lab.
- Responsible for changing out Sharp’s containers.
- Recognizes equipment malfunctions and refers for repair.
- Performs patient care as directed by nursing or medical staff, documenting in the medical record.
- Ensures adequate supply of equipment needed for patient care and stocks items such as linens, wall mounts, thermometer probes, and otoscope probes, upper and lower drawers, vitals machine, IV carts, ortho carts, urine cups and wipes, triage wound supplies, nourishment counter, patient and waiting room refrigerators.
- Performs quality control procedures and maintains records on these checks.
- Performs calibrations in compliance with manufacturer’s requirements.
- Ensures proficiency testing specimens are performed at each center per policy.
- Oversees documentation of temperatures/humidity checks.
- Monitors appropriate send‑out lab procedures.
- Maintains current appropriate and needed policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products and instrumentation; stays informed on all current technologies.
- Maintains inventory of necessary supplies and submits orders for restocking as needed.
- Demonstrates the values of the team concept consistently.
- Interacts professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, administration and the Director of Clinical Laboratory.
- Responsible for documenting correct information for compliance purposes.
- Remains knowledgeable about appropriate testing procedures.
- Performs daily opening and closing duties as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to regulations and ER policies and procedures pertaining to safety, emergency preparedness, infection control, OSHA, fire safety and hazardous materials.
- Ensures personal appearance is clean and neat.
- Wears ER identification at all times.
