Carter Machinery Company – Electric Power Generation (EPG) Apprentice Technician
Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C., is hiring an Electric Power Generation (EPG) Apprentice Technician in Elkridge, Maryland. The apprenticeship provides training and development to accurately troubleshoot, diagnose, inspect, maintain and repair engines and related electrical systems on generators and automatic transfer switches. At the end of the 15‑month program, the technician is expected to understand engines, electrical and transfer‑switch fundamentals, as well as NFPA 70E electrical safety procedures.
Ideal candidates possess a high school diploma or GED, completion of a K‑12 vocational program in Electrical or Mechanical, and/or post‑secondary diesel engine or related training, or two years of mechanical job experience. Military equipment experience is a plus. Proficiency with CAT electronic tools and software such as SIS and ET is preferred, though training will be provided.
Requirements- Self‑starter who can work with limited supervision and meet deadlines.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Excellent driving record.
- Proficient with computers, Microsoft Office, and service software; able to complete service reports and provide pertinent details for work orders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to write accurate service reports, prepare work orders, parts lists, and time‑cards in a timely manner.
- Ability to read and understand operating manuals.
- Capability to perform in situations requiring speed and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment.
- Willingness to work all shifts to meet customer needs.

Regular standing, walking, hand use (finger, handle or feel), reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and ability to speak and hear are required. Frequent sitting and lifting or moving up to 70 pounds are also part of the role. Vision needs include close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Post‑Apprenticeship CertificationUpon successful completion, you will receive accreditation from the Virginia Department of Labor, officially becoming a certified Construction Equipment Technician. You will be an integral part of our customers’ success and have the opportunity to work with an array of diverse equipment. The apprenticeship program is nationally recognized by the Department of Labor and accredited through the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Compensation and BenefitsStarting Compensation Range: $21.50 – $37.95 per hour. Base salary may vary based on experience, skills, qualifications, education, geographic location, and other factors. Additional compensation may include incentive programs tied to performance.
