Regional Manager, Geotechnical Engineering
Would you like to have a career with a collaborative, diverse, and dynamic mining company? We have an exciting opportunity for you! Barrick has an opening for the Regional Manager, Geotechnical Engineering. The Regional Manager is accountable for the technical integrity, risk management, and performance of geotechnical engineering across multiple operating mines and development projects within the region. This role establishes geotechnical standards, ensures compliance with regulatory and corporate governance requirements, and provides strategic and operational leadership in slope stability, underground ground control, and geotechnical risk mitigation.
The position balances hands‑on technical oversight with people leadership, budget accountability, and cross‑functional coordination with mine planning, operations, hydrogeology, metallurgy, and environmental teams.
At Barrick, our vision is to be the world’s most valued gold mining business by finding, developing, and operating the best assets with the best people. We are committed to a safe work environment, sending every person home safe and healthy every day, and leaving a sustainable legacy on our host communities.
Technical Leadership & Governance- Establish and enforce regional geotechnical standards, guidelines, and assurance protocols aligned with corporate policy and industry best practices (e.g., ICMM, SME, CDA/ANCOLD as applicable).
- Provide technical oversight of:
- Open pit slope design (inter-ramp, overall slope angles, berm configuration).
- Underground ground support design and ground control management plans.
- Rock mass characterization and geomechanical modeling.
- Temporary ore stockpiles, waste rock facilities, and other embankment stability.
- Manage and/or conduct stability and risk assessments at operating mines and projects. Conduct annual geotechnical performance reviews at open pit and underground mining operations.
- Provide technical input to mine planning and design, to include data analysis of work performed by consultants or subordinates. Ensure that mine plans reflect recommended geotechnical designs and monitoring programs are in place.
- Review and sign off on geotechnical designs, risk assessments, and major change management proposals.
- Ensure appropriate application of numerical modeling (e.g., FLAC, RS2, Plaxis), limit equilibrium analyses, and probabilistic stability assessments.
- Provide direct geotechnical support to site technical services and operations teams.
- Drive consistent expectations, understanding and application of engineering processes with site GM’s and senior leadership.
- Lead investigation and remediation of slope failures, seismic events, or ground control incidents.
- Optimize slope angles and ground support systems to maximize resource recovery while maintaining safety margins.
- Oversee site instrumentation programs (inclinometers, piezometers, radar monitoring) and interpretation of monitoring data.
- Maintain a regional geotechnical risk register and ensure critical controls are identified and verified.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state/provincial, and local mining regulations.
- Provide geotechnical input into scoping, PFS, FS, and expansion studies.
- Support due diligence activities for acquisitions and divestitures.
- Review geotechnical assumptions in life-of-mine (LOM) plans and economic models.
- Develop ground investigation programs, drilling campaigns, and laboratory testing scopes.
- Lead and mentor a team of site geotechnical engineers and consultants.
- Build regional technical capability through training, succession planning, and knowledge sharing.
- Review and approve regional geotechnical budgets (OPEX and relevant capital components).
- Oversee contractor performance and consulting engagements.
- Partner with:
- Mine Planning for pit optimization and sequencing.
- Hydrogeology for pore pressure and dewatering strategies.
- Metallurgy and processing where geomechanical characteristics impact recovery.
- Mine operations and dispatch on procedures, actions…
