General Description

Supervises Crisis Support Staff at YWCA North Central Indiana Elkhart County Safe Haven in accordance with policies and procedures of YWCA.

Reporting Relationship

The Elkhart Shelter Manager reports to the Vice President of Empowerment Services.

The Elkhart Shelter Manager supervises the Crisis Support Staff at Elkhart Safe Haven.

Job Responsibilities
  • Hires, interviews, and ensures proper training of Crisis Support Staff.
  • Schedules personnel to ensure 24-hour coverage in Elkhart Safe Haven shelter.
  • Coordinates with St. Joseph County Shelter Manager and Vice President of Empowerment Services to ensure shift coverage in the Elkhart County shelter.
  • Maintains Communication Log to ensure all shelter staff members are updated about client related matters during shift-change.
  • Provides coverage on crisis desk as necessary and maintains crisis call sheet documentation.
  • Maintains shelter census information and room assignments.
  • Conducts new client orientation
  • Meets individually with clients regarding house needs
  • Meets with clients leaving services
  • Provides back up for crisis call line
  • Helps clients create safety plans
  • Assists / accompany clients as necessary with court, housing, or other appointments.
  • Meets with client to investigate grievances, infractions and/or incidents
  • Meets with clients when accident/ injury report is submitted
  • Works with Director of Food Service to plan menus for shelter residents and assists in identifying food and supply needs for shelter.
  • Communicates shelter activities, needs and plans with other YWCA programs and with Vice President of Empowerment Services and Vice President of Programs & Services.
  • Consults regularly with Vice President of Empowerment Services.
  • Participates in planning and preparation for ICADV Peer Review.
  • Participates in data collection and analysis.
  • Attends staffing of cases and promotes teamwork and cooperation with colleagues
  • Assists in establishing linkages with community organizations for the purpose of referrals and collaboration.
  • Responsible for organizing donation room and ensuring toiletries, sheets, blankets, etc. are ordered and stocked.
  • Identifies shelter maintenance needs and communicates these to the Facilities Administrator.
  • Works with the Facilities Administrator to ensure safety drills are conducted at Elkhart County Safe Haven.
  • Signs off on work orders for rooms and works with maintenance to ensure rooms are ready.
  • Ensures rooms are packed, cleaned and in proper working order for clients.
  • Participates in Safety Committee.
  • Maintains 24/7 cell phone accessibility to stay in contact with the organization.
  • Completes other duties as requested.
Required Experience

Education and Experience

Bachelor s Degree or five years of professional experience in the field. Two or more years  management experience preferred.

Knowledge And Ability

Knowledge of Domestic Violence issues, public speaking skills, strong verbal and written communication skills are needed. Must be sensitive to issues of cultural diversity.
