Overview

Maintenance Mechanic role at Beacon Health System. Reports to the Manager, Facility Services. Performs a variety of preventive maintenance duties, repairs, alterations and modifications of buildings, equipment and systems in assigned area. Works independently as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain equipment and facilities in proper working condition in accordance with standard procedures, diagrams or manufacturer s instructions and compliance with codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  • Respond to calls from hospital departments, other engineering team members and management related to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Inspect equipment and buildings and operate equipment on a daily basis.
  • Operate and monitor systems and equipment such as energy management systems, high pressure boilers, large commercial air conditioning systems (including centrifugal chillers), refrigeration and pneumatics.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, determine type and extent of malfunctions, obtain materials and tools, perform repairs and test for proper operation.
  • Report serious problems to Facility Services Management or schedule maintenance with classified staff.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance schedules; maintain routine records of inspections, repairs, service requests, time and materials expended.
  • Follow established departmental safety and operational procedures; provide training to Facility Engineering staff and other hospital team members on proper safety and use of equipment.
  • Keep work areas orderly, clean, and safe; properly care for tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Complete other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
Organizational and Compliance
  • Attend and participate in department meetings and be accountable for information shared.
  • Complete mandatory education, annual competencies and department-specific education within established time frames.
  • Complete annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
  • Maintain license/certification and registration in good standing throughout the fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Adhere to universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adhere to regulatory agency requirements, survey processes and compliance; comply with organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime and other shifts and schedules when required.

Education And Experience
  • Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. One to two years of related on-the-job experience in a large/complex commercial/institutional building is preferred. Knowledge of maintenance procedures in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, high pressure steam boiler, energy management and pneumatic control systems is also preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Mechanical ability to perform minor repairs on a variety of hospital equipment using job-specific hand and power tools.
  • Courteous, cooperative interaction with personnel, hospital team members and the public.
  • Shop mathematics and blueprint reading.
  • Analytical ability to perform calculations, interpret data from blueprints and manuals, diagnose problems and implement solutions.
Working Conditions
  • May be exposed to fumes, extreme temperatures, dust, noise, asbestos, hazardous materials and other hazards such as electrical shock or gases.
Physical Demands
  • Requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, walk and stand for prolonged periods, and perform the essential functions of the position.
