Northrop Grumman's Defense Systems sector is currently seeking an experienced Environmental Engineer to support our growing business in our Elk River, MN location. Armament Systems specializes in the development and production of Ammunition, Guns and Precision Guidance Ordinance. Our Elk River location consists of a serene 3,200 acre facility with over 30 active buildings, supporting development, manufacturing and testing for Northrop Grumman's Defense Systems Division and demilitarization.
This role supports 1st shift operations on a 4/10 schedule. Position
Description:
* The environmental engineer's primary responsibility is to lead compliance efforts at a complex site, ensure environmental risks are well controlled and sustainability projects are developed and implemented to decrease the sites impacts. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
* Monitor, review and analyze regulations issued by the county, MN Pollution Control Agency and Federal EPA to determine potential impacts to operations and establish solutions to maintain compliance
* Prepare environmental emissions calculations, reporting, permitting, sampling and monitoring necessary to maintain compliance and internal company tracking is kept up to date.
* Collaborate across functional departments and personnel onsite to develop and implement effective environmental controls to prevent releasees, drive improvements or adapt to site changes.
* Perform onsite inspections to monitor compliance and best practices are followed, escalating compliance issues and trends and continually improving controls.
* Conduct studies and determine impacts and permitting requirements needed for site expansion projects, alterations to existing facilities, maintenance activities, process changes, etc.
* Perform environmental field sampling and interpretation of lab analysis reports
* Manage all aspects of hazardous waste generation, accumulation, labeling, storage, tracking, characterization and profiling of new and dynamic waste streams.
* Manage complex aspects of the site's RCRA TSD permit including submittals.
* Monitor sites impacts to air, water, waste and leveraging best practices and new technologies to drive reduction projects to achieve Sustainability goals and targets are met to the site.
* Develop Process to monitor site changes to facilities, processes and purchases to ensure environmental considerations are addressed during project scoping, development & implementation.
* Build trust and develop collaborative relationships with county, state and federal regulators needed to facilitate open communication and address compliance concerns to limit escalation.
* Develop and support the sites Environmental Management System maintain written programs to ensure the site adheres to ISO 14001 principles.
* Facilitate a positive safety culture in a heavily regulated and inherently hazardous industry.
* Support sites emergency planning efforts related to hazardous materials, chemicals and emissions.
Basic Qualifications:
* Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental, Safety, Engineering or related STEM discipline.
* 5 years of related technical experience as it relates to Environmental, Health, and Safety Engineering experience, or master's degree plus 3 yrs of relevant experience
* U.S. Citizenship is required
* Regulatory understanding and experience navigating;
Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Hazardous Waste/RCRA, EPCRA, TRI, Stormwater, drinking water and other emerging regulations.
* Environmental Permitting Expertise:
Experience managing Air, Wastewater, and Hazardous Waste permits, SPCC Plans and Stormwater Permits.
* Reporting:
Proven background in preparing and submitting annual compliance reports. Experience using Microsoft Office applications;
Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Strong Excel Skills, using spreadsheets to calculate and convert environmental emissions and reporting needs.
* Risk Management:
Demonstrated ability to monitor metrics and conduct technical risk analyses.
