Overview
The Sanitation Technician is responsible for the cleaning of all equipment and infrastructure in a thorough and efficient manner, adhering to proper sanitation procedures and guidelines while following safety rules and using designated PPE. This role includes disassembling/reassembling plant equipment and protecting sensitive equipment from damage during the sanitation process. The technician must understand how to operate cleaning equipment and apply sanitation chemicals and resources per regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities- Food Safety & Safety:
Always perform tasks according to Safety and Food Safety Standards. - Participate in safety training programs and contribute to the development of safety initiatives to promote a culture of safety.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (SQF, GMP, HACCP, OSHA) and company policies and trainings related to food safety, sanitation, and environmental regulations (e.g., HACCP, Food Safety, GMPs, Food Fraud/Defense, Allergens, Organic, Gluten Free).
- Learn how to clean different types of machinery and know the chemicals used for cleaning. Rotate cleaning areas every day.
- Cover all electronic devices and panels with plastic prior to starting wet cleaning in the production area.
- Use air nozzles and water nozzles as required; wear appropriate PPE (ear protection, bump cap, apron, boots) when using spray nozzles.
- Inspect machinery after cleaning to ensure it is completely clean and that parts are properly reassembled.
- Store cleaning equipment in their designated locations and not in improper areas.
- Follow proper Lock Out/Tag Out Procedures. Turn off and lock out mixers, corn, and flour machines as required.
- Work collaboratively in a team to clean various machinery as needed.
- Weigh waste generated by machines accurately to ensure correct waste totals.
- Report safety hazards to the supervisor (e.g., open electrical boxes, loose cables, or anything that could cause an accident).
- Use ladders or scissor lifts when trained; never climb on top of machines for cleaning.
- Label all chemicals in secondary containers following OSHA-GHS procedures.
- Operate trash and recycling machines and notify the supervisor when maximum capacity is reached.
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times (safety goggles, hair nets, apron, boots) as required.
- May assist in janitorial duties such as restroom, office area, and company property maintenance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education/Certifications and
Experience:
- Grade School Level;
High School Diploma or GED a plus - 1-2 years’ experience in food manufacturing or similar industries
- 1-2 years’ experience in sanitation procedures with food manufacturing equipment or similar experience
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient math skills
- Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills
- Basic computer skills
- Strong team player
- Self-motivated with ability to work with little supervision
- Ability to work with water and chemicals
- Commitment to safe practices while maximizing productivity and efficiency
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods; bend, stoop, crawl, reach, and grasp in awkward positions
- Ability to drive forklift/industrial equipment is required
- Reliable, punctual with scheduling flexibility including weekends, holidays, and off-shifts as needed
- Ability to comply with attendance and punctuality policies
- Ability to fulfill essential job functions in a state of alertness and safety
- Adherence to a drug and alcohol zero-tolerance policy
- Ability to comply with and follow all food safety and third-party certification policies (SQF, Gluten-Free, Organic, etc.)
