Overview
Position Summary
Under general direction of the Manager and direct supervision of the Assistant Manager, the Shop Supervisor plans, organizes, and oversees the daily operations of the District’s vehicle maintenance and fabrication shop. This position supervises shop staff and is responsible for the maintenance, repair, design, and fabrication of vehicles, equipment, and specialized tools used in mosquito control and surveillance operations.
The duties listed below are representative of the work performed and may vary depending on assignment. This list is not exhaustive, and other duties within the scope of the classification may be assigned.
- Supervises and directs shop personnel engaged in servicing, maintaining, and repairing District-owned vehicles, heavy and light equipment, and specialized mosquito control equipment.
- Develops, implements, evaluates, and updates shop policies, procedures, and standard operating practices.
- Inspects, diagnoses, and resolves complex mechanical issues involving vehicles and specialized spray and application equipment; reviews work in progress and completed repairs to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with District standards.
- Collaborates with department leadership on the maintenance, repair, design, and fabrication of custom tools and specialized equipment; performs advanced fabrication and repair work using plasma cutting, torch cutting, oxy-acetylene welding, and electrical welding techniques.
- Maintains accurate service records and inventories, including fuel usage, mileage, repair history, parts, tools, and shop equipment; prepares daily, monthly, and special reports as required.
- Ensures tools, equipment, and shop facilities are maintained in a clean, organized, and safe condition; ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, safety standards, and hazardous materials requirements.
- Plans and conducts training for District staff on vehicle operation, equipment use, safety procedures, and preventive maintenance; assists with onboarding and task training of new employees and mentors staff as appropriate.
- Assists in preparing and monitoring the annual shop and fuel budgets; researches and recommends vehicle replacements, equipment purchases, and fuel services; prepares specifications, cost estimates, justifications, and bid documents.
- Attends training courses, conferences, seminars, and professional meetings to maintain and enhance technical and supervisory skills.
- May be required to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays, particularly during peak mosquito activity periods.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases associated with mosquitoes and other vectors.
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered at the District’s discretion.
Education and Experience- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of approximately one (1) year of vocational education or training in automotive technology or automotive mechanics is preferred; and
- Five (5) years of full-time experience in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of vehicles and equipment;
- Two (2) or more years of supervisory experience is preferred.
- Valid California driver’s license; must be insurable under the District’s insurance carrier and maintain insurability throughout employment; must meet District requirements for commercial vehicle operators, including participation in initial and random drug and/or alcohol testing.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Automobile Technician Certification (A-Series 1–8); must be obtained within three (3) years of appointment if not already possessed and maintained throughout employment.
- California Department of Public Health Mosquito Control Certification in Categories A and B; must be obtained within one (1) year of appointment if not already possessed and maintained throughout employment.
