MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST (STREETS & TRAFFIC)

The City of Elk Grove Public Works Department is currently looking for skilled individuals to join the Operations & Maintenance Division. The Operations & Maintenance Division is comprised of Capital Maintenance and Operations and is responsible for planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of roadways, sidewalks, curb‑ramps, traffic signals, streetlights, signs & markings, landscaping, and drainage.

Definition

Under direction, modifies, maintains, installs, and repairs public works infrastructure including streets, sidewalks, landscapes and irrigation, traffic devices, street lighting, and storm water and drainage systems; performs a variety of manual labor and specialized maintenance work in support of the Public Works Department; operates and maintains hand and power tools and light to heavy duty vehicles and equipment; performs related duties as assigned.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direction from assigned supervisory or management personnel. May exercise technical and functional direction over and provide training to lower‑level staff and contractors.

Class Characteristics

This is the advanced journey level classification in the Maintenance Technician series responsible for performing specialized maintenance work in an assigned area. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment, and provide lead direction to a work unit of lower‑level staff. Positions in the classification rely on experience and judgment to perform assigned duties.

Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to complete assignments. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. This class is distinguished from a supervisory class in that the latter has responsibilities for the supervision and evaluation of assigned staff.

Typical Job Functions
  • Performs skilled technical duties related to area of assignment including streets, sidewalks, landscapes and irrigation, traffic devices, or storm water and drainage systems.
  • Coordinates projects related to the installation, maintenance, and repair work within area of assigned duties including planning and scheduling the work and equipment; assists in preparing detailed cost estimates; may provide lead direction to staff in technical areas of assignment.
  • Monitors contractors working within the area of assignment to ensure the work is appropriately performed.
  • Performs inventory control of maintenance equipment, parts, and materials; maintains adequate inventory and purchases supplies as needed.
  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Inspects assigned City infrastructure for safety issues, structural integrity, and possible future work projects and programs, and appropriately marks areas that need to be repaired.
  • Maintains shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
