Overview
The City of Elk Grove is now accepting applications for the position of TRAFFIC ENGINEERING MANAGER ($15,000 SIGNING BONUS!). The City seeks a highly motivated, problem-solving, and well-organized professional to serve as the Traffic Engineering Manager (Public Works Division Manager - Engineering). This is a key leadership position within the Department of Public Works, responsible for managing the Traffic Engineering Division and a range of associated programs and services.
The ideal candidate is an experienced and forward-thinking traffic engineer who values mentorship and staff development. They will foster a team environment that grows technical expertise in traffic modeling, VMT analysis, and emerging transportation strategies. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys developing people as much as solving complex engineering challenges.
The Manager performs advanced and complex technical engineering work, provides technical direction and solutions, and ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. The successful candidate will also be skilled at program development and leading teams with a focus on efficiency, innovation, and long-term impact. The Traffic Engineering Manager reports directly to the Deputy Director of Public Works - Engineering and currently supervises four full-time staff, one part-time intern, and multiple consultant contracts.
Staying abreast of new trends, innovative technologies, and relevant emerging products in addition to proven solutions is a key role of the Traffic Engineering Manager.

Definition Under general direction, plans, organizes, oversees, coordinates, and manages the staff and operations of the Engineering division, including planning, permitting, review, design, and/or construction of capital improvement projects, public works infrastructure, traffic and transportation systems, or private land development projects; participates in the development of policies and strategies for division operations; manages the effective use of division resources to improve organizational productivity and customer service;
provides complex and responsible support to management in areas of expertise; and performs related duties as assigned. Duties may vary depending on the assigned department and division as described in the job functions section.
Supervision Received and Exercised Receives general direction from assigned management personnel. Exercises supervision over supervisory, professional, technical, and administrative support staff through subordinate levels of supervision.
Class Characteristics This is a management classification responsible for managing an engineering division in the Public Works or Community Development Department. The incumbent develops and implements policies and procedures for the division, including short- and long-term planning, budget administration and reporting, and coordination of key programs/projects with other City divisions and external agencies. Positions apply advanced management principles and strategic thinking to decisions that impact the organization and the public being served.
