Job OverviewThe Telemetry Technician oversees and interprets the cardiac monitor for arrhythmias and changes in heart rhythm. They document patient monitoring data, including rhythm strips and measurements, report abnormal rhythms or rates, and apply telemetry leads accurately. They ensure equipment functions, clean, troubleshoot, and maintain telemetry to prevent malfunctions.
The Telemetry Unit is a 38‑bed, team‑oriented unit providing medical/surgical and diagnostic services to a diverse cardiac population, including congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, respiratory compromise, and dysrhythmias.
Required Qualifications- HS Diploma or GED
- Completion of a cardiovascular technology course or successful completion of a telemetry/monitor technician course
- Ability to examine heartbeat patterns in real time and ensure monitors are functioning correctly
- Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association
- At least one year of telemetry/monitoring work experience
- Promotes and implements patient and family‑centered care; maintains a compassionate, supportive environment.
- Observes and reports patients’ responses to interventions; knows how to activate the code system; reports cardiac rhythm to physicians, RN, and incoming staff.
- Communicates and records pertinent information; records vital signs and bedside glucose results; documents accurately and legibly.
- Prepares patients for monitoring using proper electrode placement; removes telemetry transmitters for discharged or transferred patients.
- Cleans and disinfects equipment; orders supplies; reports shortages to charge nurse.
- Monitors medication storage areas; checks expiration dates and manages supplies.
- Maintains inventory of telemetry transmitters each shift; runs, interprets, and posts EKG strips within 3 hours of shift start; maintains telemetry packs.
- Provides a safe environment; performs surveillance to prevent falls.
- Attends meetings and departmental programs; participates in inter‑ and intra‑departmental activities.
- Maintains adequate monitor coverage and alarms; completes shift documentation; conducts patient status rounds every two hours or PRN.
- Greets and assists physicians, staff, patients, and visitors; answers phone courteously.
