Position Summary

Support a strength-based family support and education approach to the growth of parents’ engagement with their children through the use of the Parents as Teachers curriculum to serve eligible families within our district prenatally through the age of three in a home visiting format.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Plan and engage eligible families in visits using the Illinois Early Guidelines that focus on Parents as Teachers three key areas of: parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family wellbeing.
  • Connect with families a minimum of 2 times per month for visits that primarily occur in the families home but can also have the flexibility to meet within the community if requested by the family.
  • Participate as part of a team to plan and conduct monthly group connections, in both English and Spanish, to support continued learning and positive parent-child interactions.
  • Conduct developmental screenings in accordance with funder requirements and interpret screening results for parents, discuss parenting practices based on those results and provide either follow up activities to address concerns or make referrals to community partners if needed.
  • Partner with parents to establish, record and support them in achieving child development and parenting goals that they want to focus on.
  • Parent Educator strengthens families by building partnerships, connecting families to supports, fostering engagement/leadership in schools.
  • Understand data requirements and develop organizational strategies to support compliance.
  • Maintains files with timely input of planning guides, personal visit records, family goals, developmental screenings, resource connections and additional required documents for submission for funder audits and Blue-Ribbon Recertification with Parents as Teachers National.
  • Facilitates the home visiting to preschool transition to afford families a smooth transition to high quality preschool programming.
  • Willingness to develop an understanding of community resources and how to appropriately refer and connect families to said resources.
  • Participate in program and community recruitment efforts as needed.
  • Understand the registration process in order to support families in the completion of registration requirements.
  • Receive and process referrals in compliance with program guidelines.
  • Ability to serve any eligible families within the district boundaries.
  • Flexibility in schedule to allow for non-traditional work hours as needed (ex. Late afternoons/evenings, Saturday visits)
  • Engages with families, teammates, and community partners in a relational manner free of judgment and bias.
  • Participate in area home visiting collaborative meetings, community partner meetings, required twice monthly staff meetings, required twice monthly reflective supervision as well as monthly Infant Mental Health Consultant meetings and Family Advisory Council, as well as other opportunities that may arise.
  • Ability to complete a minimum of 20 hours of professional development per fiscal year.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Experience / Knowledge
  • Past work with children and families preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skill and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Cultural awareness, recognize and respect families diverse cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and values ensuring equitable and effective services tailored to their needs.
Physical Demands
  • Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.
  • Must be able to lift and transport up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to work on the floor with ease.
  • Must have access to your own transportation to get to and from visits.
