The salary in the Department of Water and Power ranges from $64,038 to $79,573 and $71,597 to $88,948.
Position OverviewA Maintenance and Construction Helper performs a variety of semi‑skilled manual tasks in construction, maintenance, and repair activities.
Requirements /Minimum Qualifications
- Six months as a Utility Pre‑Craft Trainee with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power;
or - One year of full‑time paid experience in construction, craft, or landscaping work;
or - One year of full‑time paid experience in construction, craft, or landscaping work while in the United States Armed Forces.
- Valid California Class A, B, or C driver’s license may be required for some positions.
- May be required to hold an EPA‑approved Technician Certificate.
- May need to undergo annual medical examinations for hazardous work environments.
- Applicants with at least six months of Experience Requirement #2 or #3 may file for this examination; however, appointment requires the full one‑year requirement.
- Active U.S. Military personnel may file for this examination but cannot be appointed until discharge with satisfactory performance; proof must be provided before appointment.
- Submission must include DD‑214 or military End of Active Obligation Service within six months of application; attachments must be uploaded before submitting.
- Applications accepted only on specified online filing dates: 8:00 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2022 - 11:59 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2022 and 8:00 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2023 - 11:59 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2023

The examination consists exclusively of a weighted multiple‑choice test administered and proctored online.
Competencies evaluated include Reading Comprehension;
Mathematics;
Attention to Detail;
Interpersonal Skills;
Teamwork;
Safety Focus; and Job Knowledge.
Test dates are anticipated to be administered between June 21 and June 27, 2022 for the 2022 filing period, or between August 8 and August 14, 2023 for the 2023 filing period.
COVID‑19 precautions may allow for onsite testing for eligible candidates with hardship.
