Under immediate supervision, installs, tests, repairs, maintains and terminates the use of telecommunication and electronic equipment. Various job assignments may involve support of either Voice/Data/Radio equipment.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
- Entry Level I - requires some experience in telecommunications equipment and will complete assignments under immediate supervision.
- Intermediate Level II - requires two (2) years relevant experience, will function at a Journeyman level meeting job assignments expectations under general supervision.
- Expert Level III - requires extensive relevant experience functioning as department resource for implementation/troubleshooting under minimal supervision.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Telecommunications Equipment – terminals, keyboards, printers, telephones, and modems. Fault isolation down to the board level may be required.
- Radios and Cellular Phones – sirens, equipment in authorized vehicles, mobile equipment and other electronic equipment as assigned.
- Telecommunication Cables – various types, terminating on blocks, jacks or other connectors.
- Maintains/updates maintenance logs as assigned.
- Performs scheduled routine equipment maintenance.
- Maintains equipment inventory records and related activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Some knowledge of principles and procedures regarding the installation of communication cabling and devices.
Supplemental Requirement Information- Installation/maintenance may involve working in confined spaces and lifting equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to climb ladders up to 20 feet.
- Work may involve outdoor activity in all types of weather conditions.
- Ability to perform work at tower heights of 200 feet.
- Work will include use of full range of body movements involving reaching, bending, grasping, and climbing.
- Color recognition and identification.
- Work may involve working with batteries.
- Requires an ability and willingness to pull and terminate all types of telecommunications cables.
Education/
Experience:
Some telecommunications experience, relevant, equivalent training.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California driver license.
