Summary

Our client, a Japanese food company backed by a well-established parent company in Japan, is in an exciting growth phase in the U.S. This role offers the opportunity to lead market expansion and retail sales growth across key U.S. retail channels, with strong support and resources from headquarters.

Role Overview

They are seeking a results-driven Market Development Manager to drive sales expansion into major U.S. retail chains, build strong buyer relationships, and develop go-to-market strategies to accelerate growth. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment and has proven success launching and scaling consumer brands in the U.S. retail market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities with major U.S. retail chains
  • Present products and negotiate with buyers and key decision-makers
  • Analyze market trends, customer needs, and competitors to shape strategy
  • Develop and execute market expansion plans (new channels, segments, product launches)
  • Build and manage relationships with distributors, retailers, and strategic partners
  • Prepare sales forecasts, manage pipelines, and report progress
  • Track performance (sales, revenue, market share) and propose improvements
  • Represent the brand at trade shows and industry events as the U.S. face of the company
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration to support launches and business growth

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or related field (preferred)
  • 5+ years of sales / business development experience
  • Direct sales experience with U.S. retail chains (Ex: Erewhon, Bristol Farms, Kroger, Safeway, Vons, Sprouts, Walmart, Costco, Target, and more)
  • Food & beverage / consumer packaged goods (CPG) experience strongly preferred
  • Strong negotiation, relationship-building, and presentation skills
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage multiple projects
  • Japanese language skills are a plus (not required)
