What you will do:Performs routine, manual tasks in the general upkeep and cleaning of Police Department facilities and grounds. This employee must exercise some independence, as the employee travels among assigned facilities to complete assigned work. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a mid-level supervisor or the department head to which the employee is assigned. Work is evaluated for cleanliness and overall appearance of facilities and grounds, and is checked daily by visual inspection and feedback from patrons.
Work will be 10-20 hours per week as decided between the applicant and supervisor. Hours may be worked during normal business hours or after in most circumstances.

- Floor maintenance to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, waxing, and buffing floors in city facilities, including indoor and outdoor floors.
- Trash collection to include emptying small garbage cans in offices, larger trash cans in public areas and restrooms, placing trash in larger bins outside, etc.
- Other cleaning duties such as cleaning windows, dusting glass fixtures, replacing supplies in various places, re‑stocking supplies.
- Other minor maintenance duties such as replacing light bulbs, replacing filters, and reporting larger maintenance needs to the supervisor.
- Assisting with moving items such as assembling and disassembling tables and chairs for special events throughout the department, moving desks and chairs within the department, etc.
- Providing support during special events by collecting garbage, collecting litter, and assisting with other tasks as needed.
- Working knowledge of common cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment.
- Skill in or ability to learn how to operate a high speed buffer, stripping machine, wax applicator.
- Skill in mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, and other cleaning skills.
- Demonstrated ability to receive and carry out instructions provided by a supervisor.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and report to a supervisor the custodial and maintenance needs of various facilities.
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- One year of experience in custodial or maintenance work
- NC Driver's License
Physical Requirements and
Working Conditions:
- Work in this class is medium work, requiring exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- This employee must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
- Inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Employee is subject to hazards, including mechanical equipment and household cleaning products.
