Sheriff's Captain - Law Enforcement About the Position:

This is a career progression and management opportunity for current Sheriff's Lieutenants on the San Diego Sheriff's Department force. The role of the Sheriff's Captain is significant in that they are responsible for directing a major organizational unit of the Sheriff's Department. Candidate:

The desirable traits for Sheriff's Captain are leadership, team builder, communicates effectively, knowledge worker, decision maker, strategic perspective, leverages resources (coaches and develops), demonstrates ethical behavior, maximizes team resources, and supportive of change. California P.O.S.T. Management certification is highly desirable. Sheriff Captains who have obtained a Peace Officer Standards and Training Management Certificate shall be compensated at eleven percent (17%) above the base hourly wage rate.

REQUIRED

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Two years of experience as a Sheriff's Lieutenant;
    AND
  • Successful completion of the required California POST Management Course (Title II, Chapter 2, Section 1005c of the Administrative Code of California).
  • NOTE:
  • Individuals must meet the requirements of lower levels classifications in this series.
  • Positions in this classification are Peace Officers as defined in Section 830 of the California Penal Code, and must meet employment guidelines and standards established by the Commission for Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST); the provisions of Sections 1029 and 1031 of the California Government Code; and the Standards and Training for Corrections (STC), Selection and Training Standards, as contained in Title 15, Sections 100 – 358, California Code of Regulations.

    Applicants must be 21 years of age by the time of appointment. A valid Proof of Eligibility in good standing issued by Police Officer Standard Training (POST) and ability to carry a firearm are required and must be maintained throughout your employment as a Sheriff's Captain with the San Diego Sheriff's Department.

    The names of qualified candidates will be placed on a twelve (12) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental questionnaire. If you are successful in the initial screening process your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.
