About This RoleConsertus is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to support LAWA’s Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple active projects within LAWA’s Capital Improvement Program. This is an onsite role at LAX focused on mechanical and plumbing construction inspections for terminal and building projects, utilities, and airport improvements.
Important Requirements To Apply- Current ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector certification (required)
- Cal‑OSHA 30‑hour training completed within the last 4 years (required)
- Inspect airport improvements and utilities projects to verify conformance to plans, specs, codes, permits, and contract documents.
- Conduct daily mechanical and plumbing inspections across building/terminal construction projects for code and specification compliance.
- Review and interpret construction documents including drawings, specs, shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
- Prepare detailed daily inspection reports documenting who/what/when/where/how for observed work activities.
- Verify contractor compliance with applicable local/state/national codes and LAWA standards (e.g., CBC/CMC).
- Track and document time‑and‑material work, field changes, and quantities.
- Assist with validation of contractor progress payment requests using the schedule of values.
- Coordinate and support special inspections and testing activities with engineers, contractors, and third‑party agencies.
- Domestic water and sewage systems
- Venting, fire sprinklers, and gas piping
- HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork)
- Smoke control systems
- Mechanical ventilation and exhaust
- Fire/life safety integration (smoke dampers, shutdowns, etc.)
- Mechanical/plumbing shutdowns, lockout/tagout procedures
- Commissioning and balancing reports
- Underground utilities
- Fire life safety systems including smoke/heat detectors and FM‑200 suppression systems
- 3+ years of experience performing mechanical inspections for building construction.
- Thorough knowledge of materials and methods used in installation of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
- Current ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector certification (required).
- Cal‑OSHA 30‑hour training completed within the last 4 years (required).
- Fall protection and harness training (required).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a LAWA SIDA badge prior to start (required).
- Proficiency with inspection and document control tools such as:
Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word), Adobe Pro, Bluebeam, PM Web (or similar).
- High school diploma (or equivalent).
- Additional ICC Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification.
- NFPA 70E training within the last 3 years.
- Journeyman/master plumbing experience with progression into inspection.
- Confined Space Entry training.
- Experience inspecting mechanical systems for large-scale commercial, industrial, or public buildings.
- Experience coordinating with multiple stakeholders (contractors, engineers, AHJs/city officials).
