Lemoore College Peer Tutor - DSPS

Temporary Employment

Salary: $16.50 per hour.

Schedule:

19‑24 hours per week, 10 months a year.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide peer and walk‑in tutoring to students. The tutor will assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to provide support and guidance with college course material.

Advancement to an advanced level will require supplemental experience and/or education.

Responsibilities
  • Provide individual, small group and/or in‑class tutoring to students.
  • Review class material, texts, predict test questions, formulate ideas for papers, work on solutions to problems and assess a student’s learning curve.
  • Keep the tutorial center clean.
  • Enforce tutorial policies for co‑workers and students.
  • Assist in enforcing library policies and maintaining the tutorial computer lab.
  • Contact assigned contacts promptly.
  • Record tutorial sessions and select clients using the SARS tutorial computer.
Knowledge and Skills

This position requires the incumbent to have knowledge of the content of an assigned subject and the skill to create session handouts. In‑depth knowledge of office management techniques including scheduling and customer service is needed. A working knowledge of learning styles, tutorial and instructional techniques, and computer‑aided instructional tools and software applications is required. Proficiency in common office productivity software (word processing, spreadsheets, intranet) and knowledge of proper English grammar, vocabulary, syntax, spelling, and punctuation are necessary.

Human‑relation skills to convey technical concepts and facilitate small‑group learning are essential.

Abilities

Ability to be punctual for all scheduled appointments; to complete and hand in all required paperwork; and to be responsible, friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diverse student population. Ability to make presentations to classroom‑sized groups and to facilitate learning for students, building their confidence.

Physical Abilities

The incumbent must function indoors in an office environment primarily for sedentary work, with the ability to read printed materials with near vision, carry on conversations in person and over the phone, retrieve work materials from overhead, waist, and ground‑level files, and use manual and finger dexterity for writing, using a pointing device, and keyboarding on a microcomputer and other standardized office equipment requiring repetitive motions.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED. Must maintain a 2.7 or higher GPA and have received a B or higher in the specific subject(s) to be tutored. Must be referred by instructor(s) for currently enrolled subjects.

Licenses and Certificates

Driver’s license may be required. Must be willing and able to complete the EA55 course (general tutoring) and other training as needed.

Work is performed indoors with minimal safety considerations.
