the ASPCA Equine Welfare Department

The work of the ASPCA’s Equine Welfare Department (EW department) is aimed at the ASPCA’s goals of improving shelter capacity, expanding access to veterinary care, and leading efforts to prevent and respond to cruelty. The ASPCA Equine Transition and Adoption Center (ETAC) operates in Oklahoma as a combination “learning lab” and state-wide solution for provision of safety-net care and transition of “hard to adopt” equines.

ETAC, the ASPCA Right Horse program and its network of Partners work together to develop, improve and share practices that allow the national equine sheltering field to support and adopt out more equines, reducing cruelty and suffering.

What You’ll Do

The Equine Support and Operations Manager supports all Equine Transition and Adoption Center daily operations. This is a dynamic, hands‑on role where no two days look the same. In this role, you’ll keep operations moving by triaging daily priorities, anticipating team needs, and taking initiative to ensure equines receive timely, high‑quality care.

  • Handle horses during medical exams, support behavioral treatment plans, manage inventory, data entry, and equine transport logistics.
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures, participate in team meetings, and help shape evolving workflows.
  • Build meaningful relationships with colleagues, community members, partner organizations, and equine professionals to align efforts and resources.
  • Reports to the Director of Operations, Equine Transition and Adoption Center; no direct reports.
Where and When You’ll Work

This position is onsite and located in El Reno, OK. It is a full‑time position, Tuesday–Saturday 9‑5, and requires flexibility for early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 15% annually.
  • Willingness to attend mandatory staff meetings, events, and training classes outside regular hours.
  • Must work during inclement weather, including wind, rain, snow, and heat.
  • Must provide a valid driver’s license, pass a motor vehicle history check, and a Department of Transportation Medical Exam.
Compensation

Target hiring range: $60,000‑$64,000 annually. Pay may increase based on performance.

Responsibilities
  • ETAC Operations and Logistics:
    • Track all ETAC equine information using Airtable.
    • Oversee inventories, including promotional stock and medical supplies.
    • Fulfill orders and shipments for events, partners, and other sites.
    • Maintain barn cleanliness and organization.
    • Plan, manage, and implement on‑site events and off‑site learning opportunities.
    • Coordinate hosting of national conferences and events.
    • Help develop standardized documentation (SOPs, process maps).
    • Support ETAC goals and community engagement.
  • Client and Partner Engagement:
    • Primary point of contact for ETAC inquiries via phone, email, and in‑person.
    • Collaborate with Midwest Office call takers to troubleshoot hotline challenges.
    • Attend in‑field appointments with unfamiliar equines.
    • Coordinate transportation of new intakes with the Director of Operations.
    • Assist during adoption and pickup appointments.
    • Maintain professional relationships with contractors, partners, and leaseholder team.
    • Support volunteer program management.
    • Schedule and provide safety‑net care with veterinary partners; recruit new partners.
