Child Development/Support, Guidance Counselor: Social/Educational
Perform casework service to help students resolve personal, emotional, and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their ability to enjoy the benefits of the educational process. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as district policies, procedures, and regulations.
Essential Functions- Perform casework services with parents to increase understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child's problems, and their knowledge and use of available and appropriate resources.
- Supervise the referral of students and parents to outside agencies.
- Serve as liaison between student, home, school, and community resources, such as family service agencies, child guidance clinics, courts, protective services, doctors and clergy members, military exceptional families program, and Texas waiver programs. Access and work closely with community agencies to identify resources for student and family support.
- Provide crisis intervention and preventative support as needed by students and their families.
- Make home visits to gather information relating to students.
- Consult with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to determine cause of student problems and effective solutions.
- Arrange for medical, psychiatric, and other tests and examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures.
- Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist in interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.
- Serve as consultant to school personnel regarding students or situations that are not referred for direct district or outside services.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of parent involvement activities.
- Develop and conduct parenting training and support groups.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
- Supervise persons completing practicum or internship through a college or university program.
- Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of social work services and make changes based on the findings of effectiveness.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and digital reports, records, and other required documents.
- Comply with policies and regulations established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule and the district.
- Provide access to resources such as clothing, hygiene, and home and dry goods for a food bank for students and families.
- Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.
- Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
- Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.
Master's degree in social work;
Master Social Worker License granted by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners; two (2) years of experience in social work; knowledge of individual and group counseling skills; knowledge and skill in casework methods; strong consultation skills for conferencing with teachers, parents and students; knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions; awareness and ability to access community resources;
excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
Maintain emotional control under stress; ability to work with frequent interruptions; prolonged use of computers and occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Regular district wide travel to student homes and multiple work locations as assigned. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
