Responsibilities
  • Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Administrator/Nurse Manager, observes, assesses, plans, intervenes and evaluates outcomes and documents all aspects of patient care.
  • Possesses a unique knowledge regarding the patient population to be served and may coordinate scheduling within assigned areas.
  • Provides primary proactive management for service area during assigned shift and supervises, counsels, and evaluates other nursing staff.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Coordinator, other Nurse Managers, and MH Supervisor/Specialist to ensure 24‑hour continuity of care.
  • Assumes duties of the Nurse Coordinator during absences and is flexible in work schedule.
  • Provides direct nursing care to individual patients as needed, understanding duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response, COOP activation, and alternate shift patterns as required.
  • Answers for additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights and/or weekends.
  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
  • Performs CPR/Heimlich techniques correctly and safely per American Heart Association specifications.
  • Provides direction and coordination of staffing and patient care activities on assigned units.
  • Facilitates smooth admission/transfer process and communicates with admissions staff, unit staff, etc.
  • Implements nursing interventions per medical staff orders and hospital policies.
  • Provides and documents group teaching to patients on medications, illnesses, and treatments.
  • Implements special precautions, explains rights restrictions, and implements restraint/seclusion procedures.
  • Participates in the client abuse and neglect process and ensures patient safety.
  • Participates as nursing representative in performance improvement teams and coordinates nursing staff utilization.
  • Attends mandatory training and participates in ongoing education.
  • Participates in disaster response/COOP activation if required.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of American Nurses Association nursing standards, departmental policies, and the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Skills in supervisory and management techniques, CPR, aggression management, restraint techniques, and emergency care.
  • Ability to handle crisis situations calmly and communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Licensed to practice as an RN in Texas (or state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact).
  • Graduation from a nursing program accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • At least six months of experience as a practicing registered nurse; preferred six months in a health agency, hospital, or health‑care facility.
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Additional Information
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
  • Males ages 18‑25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age;
    Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and extended hours possible.
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations required. Must be vaccinated according to level of contact with individuals; if not vaccinated for influenza, may be required to wear a mask and take protective measures.
