Overview
The job of nurse practitioners mainly focuses on providing general care to patients of all ages. They attend to the patient’s needs with the utmost patience, care, compassion, and understanding. As licensed registered nurses, they can perform tasks such as conducting tests, recording medical histories, providing treatments, assisting physicians, and enhancing public awareness of the importance of health. Their specific area of expertise would depend on their chosen field of specialization, which includes;
geriatric health, pediatrics health, adult health, mental health, school health, nurse midwifery, and anesthesiology.
- Carry out physical exams and record the health history of patients.
- Give basic healthcare treatment.
- Write prescriptions and order medical tests.
- Conduct counseling sessions for elderly patients and their family members (geriatric nurse practitioners).
- Help the physician in deciding on the right treatment option for the patients.
- Educate cancer patients on how to manage their life (oncology nurse practitioners).
- Help psychiatrists and psychologists in reviewing the condition of the patients and determine the right option for them (psychiatric nurse practitioner).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Work Experience
- Minimum 1-year training in an Approved and Accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner Program of a Primary Care Specialty (Family Practice, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, etc.).
- Minimum 2 years experience as an RN or as an N.P. in a primary care setting, preferably with 1 year in a Community Health Center or a Public Health Agency.
- Certified as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in their specialty.
- Current, unrestricted license to practice as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the State of Texas.
- Graduate of an Approved and Accredited Registered Nurse Program.
- Graduate of an Approved and Accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner Program.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practice of medicine and health services.
- Special knowledge in the area of preventive medicine.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to establish and maintain good rapport with patients.
- Ability to exercise judgment in unusual or stressful situations.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish.
