Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in propagating, cultivating, and harvesting horticultural specialties such as shrubs, annuals, perennials, flowering plants, potted arrangements, and native plant materials throughout the entire UTEP campus. Supervises the UTEP Grounds Department greenhouse. Supervises and coordinates activities of employees engaged in landscaping projects, field maintenance, sod replacement, and event support.
Essential FunctionsSupervises landscaping projects and develops seasonal vegetation plans for landscaped areas throughout campus property. Monitors performance, enforces safety and operational policies, and implements corrective actions as needed. Develops and oversees work schedules, staffing plans, and resource allocation to maximize efficiency across departments. Coordinates cross-functional efforts with other trade supervisors and department leaders to support seamless project execution and timely job completion.
Evaluates landscape and vegetation needs, and instructs grounds maintenance personnel on fertilizer and pesticide application needs. Oversees landscaping efforts, including irrigation system efficiency/needs, vegetation selection, and maintenance of athletic fields. Supervises multidisciplinary maintenance teams, ensuring effective execution of daily operations and long-term maintenance strategies. Develops protocols and procedures for plant species care and maintenance, and maintains an inventory of all plant materials on campus.
Collaborates with the Irrigation Supervisor and Grounds Manager to implement flower beds and decorative plant arrangements. Prepares landscape plans and identifies types and quantities of plantings for existing and new landscaped areas; schedules growing and planting activities; and maintains inventory of propagation operations. Maintains inventory of growing equipment, supplies, and orders additional materials as needed. Oversees greenhouse operations, including fertilization programs;
documents and regulates humidity, temperature, ventilation, and carbon dioxide conditions; coordinates with Chemical Applicator to apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides as needed to control pests within Integrated Pest Management guidelines; maintains proper watering schedule and cultivation procedures to ensure conformance with quality control standards; inspects and identifies repairs, malfunctions, and improvement opportunities for the greenhouse.
