Position SummaryUnder moderate supervision and with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, responsible for maintaining trees and plants to ensure their health, safe, and in attractive condition, including chemical applications, repairing, cabling, watering and pruning. Responsible for the removal of any dead, diseased, and declining trees and plants on campus.
Essential Functions- Manages the performance and development of maintenance teams and trade personnel ensuring effective execution of daily operations and long‑term maintenance strategies.
- Provides guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations for subordinate supervisors and technical staff, fostering a culture of accountability excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Develops and oversees work schedules, staffing plans, and resource allocation to maximize efficiency across departments.
- Reviews and evaluates tree maintenance needs and takes appropriate action.
- Prepares, maintains, updates and reviews tree inventory; prepares written and oral reports regarding tree planting and tree removal to Grounds Management Personnel and other University personnel.
- Knowledge of local tree and plant species and arboricultural practices.
- Knowledge of tree maintenance methods and equipment maintenance.
- Leads enterprise‑wide facilities planning to ensure optimal use of resources and long‑term resilience of infrastructure.
- Ability to safely climb trees to perform proper pruning, as well as lift certification to perform inspections and pruning throughout campus.
- Knowledge of insects and diseases that affect trees and plants in the region and the actions necessary to correct problems.
- Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.
- Instructs and assists ground personnel with tree installations, fertilization practices, pruning, and take downs as necessary.
- Orders and installs plant material and equipment for projects and sites throughout campus.
- Oversee planning and implementation of quality control functions to assure that proper methods are used and standards are met. Monitors’ performance enforces compliance with safety and operational policies, and implements corrective actions as needed.
- Provides strategic coordination for facilities operations, aligning maintenance, capital planning, and infrastructure initiatives with long‑term organizational objectives and industry best practices.
- Serves as the primary liaison between executive leadership, external contractors, regulatory agencies, and internal employees to ensure compliance, project alignment, and risk mitigation.
- Collaborate with other supervisors and staff to ensure holistic landscape health. Just as with other Facilities Services departments for efficiency and quality.
- Implements building technologies, data‑informed maintenance practices, and coordination across teams to improve service delivery.
- Assures that the University complies with Tree Campus USA criteria and submits annual applications.
- Complies with all State and University policies.
- Other duties may be assigned.
