Position Information

Hiring Department: Data Center and Infrastructure Operations

Reports To: Telecomm Infrastructure Manager

Job Location: Onsite El Paso

Posting End Date: Open until filled. This posting may close once a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.

Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday
- Friday 8:00am-5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends.

Must be available on an “On Call” basis.

Position Summary

Under moderate supervision, reports to the Manager of Infrastructure Operations; responsible for installing, monitoring, configuring, documenting, and deploying network and telecommunication infrastructure. This responsibility includes but is not limited to providing all cabling and components to ensure fully available & operational network services and Wi‑fi, connectivity to all campus system users. A primary focus will be to aid the Enterprise Network & Telecommunication team with programming & automated solutions to improve security and scalability of the campus network infrastructure.

Provides comprehensive support for Infrastructure Operations, delivering assistance and customer service to all IR teams and the broader university community.

Statement Of Duties And Responsibilities
  • Configures, installs, and maintains local area network hardware, software, telecommunications, and wireless services including software applications, antennas, peripherals, servers, routers, bridges, switches, modems, cabling, patches, hubs, and Internet service providers; surveys sites and distances prior to installation of networking components.
  • Performs analysis of network needs and contributes to design of network architecture, integration, and installation.
  • Coordinates installation or performs upgrades of hardware and software by others.
  • Requisition s bids from vendors and coordinates third‑party maintenance for network hardware, software, telecommunications, and wireless services.
  • Provides support to and trains users in local area network administration and usage.
  • Monitors and maintains network stability.
  • Communicates and coordinates network schedule, backups, and downtime to users.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation of network configurations, cabling, and wireless layouts; establishes and maintains network users, user environment, directories, and security.
  • Develops and communicates standards for use, operations, and security of network, personal computers, and data.
  • Performs network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose common network problems; enters diagnostic commands into computer to determine nature of problem, and reads codes on screen to diagnose problem.
  • Understands and/or is responsible for working on software development, network automation and combines hands‑on programming experience to improve scalability, reliability, and security across enterprise and cloud networks.
  • Understands and/or has basic computer network concepts and has proficiency in network protocols.
  • Understands and/or has knowledge in programming languages, such as Python, Go, Bash, C++; develops custom applications for network monitoring, telemetry, and analytics.
  • Applies programmability solutions using API's, SDKs and controllers (e.g. REST, NETCONF, gRPC).
  • Understands and/or applies knowledge to build and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and able to use Ansible, Terraform, or Pulumi.
  • Integrates network services with CI/CD pipelines to enable automated deployment and validation.
  • Researches and evaluates new technologies.
  • Collects and analyzes network and memory utilization.
  • Monitors network traffic (incoming and outgoing) and makes necessary recommendations for additional resources and hardware.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.
  • Complies with all State and University policies.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
