Overview

Job Title: Optometry Technician

Location: Soldier Readiness Processing Center (SRP), William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC), 18511 Highlander Medics St, Fort Bliss, TX 79906, and outlying clinics.

Start Date:

1 April 2026

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday,  (SRP operational hours). Up to 48 mission-driven overage hours per FTE may be required annually beyond regularly scheduled duty hours, as authorized by the Government.

Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED;
    Completion of an optometric technician course or formal optometric on the job training or training and certification obtained through the Army, Navy, or Air Force Optometry Technician program.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of one (1) year of recent experience within the last two (2) years working as an Optometry Technician or Ophthalmic Technician in a clinical or medical setting.
    • Experience performing vision screening tests and collecting preliminary eye examination data.
    • Experience assisting optometrists during eye examinations and readiness-related vision assessments.
  • License / Certification:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA or Red Cross) required.
  • Other Requirements: U.S. Citizenship required.
Responsibilities
  • Support Soldier Readiness Processing (SRP) vision operations by assisting with optometry services for service members undergoing mobilization, demobilization, redeployment, and separation.
  • Perform preliminary vision testing, including visual acuity measurements, color vision screening, depth perception testing, and other readiness-related optometry screenings as directed.
  • Collect and record patient history information related to vision and eye health prior to provider examination.
  • Prepare service members for optometry evaluations by positioning patients and operating diagnostic equipment as directed.
  • Assist optometrists during eye examinations by operating screening instruments and supporting examination flow.
  • Prepare, clean, and reset optometry examination rooms and equipment between patients to support high-volume SRP throughput.
  • Escort service members through optometry processing stations and ensure timely movement through SRP vision workflows.
  • Accurately document assigned screening results and support activities in MHS GENESIS or other Government-designated systems, as directed.
  • Support surge optometry operations during peak MOB/DEMOB cycles, including extended duty hours when mission required.
