Position Summary

The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant II (PNA II) performs moderately complex rehabilitative patient care services in an inpatient setting. Under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the PNA II provides emergency, health, and personal care services to patients, interacts therapeutically, observes and documents patient conditions and behaviors, and participates in individualized and unit‑based programming. The primary responsibility is to maintain ongoing therapeutic interactions to promote living and social skills and encourage progress toward a less restrictive environment.

The PNA II actively supports the recovery plan, participates in shift reports, recovery team meetings, and may provide guidance to PNAs I. The role requires adherence to well‑defined guidelines, possession of basic nursing skills, and the ability to work under general supervision.

Essential Job Functions

• Attends work on a regular basis; may work specific or rotating shifts, extended shifts, or overtime following agency leave policy.

• Implements individualized recovery plans and provides consistent, ongoing support to help patients reach goals.

• Engages patients promptly using therapeutic, person‑centered communication.

• Assists with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence.

• Communicates effectively with team members to promote a positive workplace.

• Participates in the recovery or admissions team, providing verbal and written communication concerning patients.

• Uses basic computer skills for documentation, reporting procedures, and timely communication.

• Assists the licensed nurse in monitoring patients for medication administration; includes taking and monitoring vital signs.

• Promotes safety through continuous environmental awareness and patient engagement.

• Encourages participation in classes and programs; may co‑facilitate groups.

• Responds to crisis or psychiatric emergency situations using the least restrictive intervention, applying Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies (TIPS) under RN supervision.

• Performs CPR/Heimlich techniques and uses an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) safely per American Heart Association specifications.

• Provides timely, clinically relevant patient information to RN.

• Offers guidance and preceptorship to other PNAs when PNAs III and IV are unavailable.

• Serves on unit‑based and hospital‑wide committees, contributing to quality improvement and patient safety.
