MOS Codes: 370 (Coast Guard), 2847 (Marine Corps), H03A (Navy), 25S (Army).
Education and ExperienceHigh School diploma, GED, or higher, and two (2) years of general work experience, one (1) year of which included public contact.
Licenses and Certifications- American Heart Association Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Health Provider course (or equivalent)
- Basic First Aid certification
- Emergency Medical Dispatch and Emergency Fire Dispatch courses
- International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) certification
- Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) certification, including online Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (TLETS) course
- Priority Dispatch Pro-QA certification
- Basic Telecommunicator Certificate Course
- Crisis Communication Telecommunicator Course
- Telecommunicator License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
All certifications must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment and maintained throughout employment.
Special RequirementsMust be a current U.S. citizen (per TCOLE licensure requirements). Must successfully pass an audiogram, drug screening, psychological examination, and a stringent background investigation.
PromotionUpon successful completion of the six (6) month training program, the trainee will be promoted to the Public Safety Communicator position.
ResponsibilitiesAs a trainee Public Safety Communicator, responsibilities include processing emergency and non‑emergency telephone calls, dispatching, monitoring and coordinating activities of Police, Fire, and Medical personnel using a multi‑channel radio system, entering information into a computer‑aided dispatch (CAD) system, providing accurate directions to citizens and personnel, monitoring electronic equipment and radio channels, and performing related incidental duties to support unit and team objectives.
TypingRequirement
The position requires the ability to type at least 35 words per minute (wpm). Candidates must provide an official typing test verifying this ability within three (3) working days of receiving a job offer.
Application ProcessThe recruitment process includes a realistic job preview, background investigation, oral board interview, audiogram, and psychological exam. Candidates will be scheduled to progress through the phases on the basis of their rank on the eligible list and will only receive a final offer of employment after successfully completing all components.
