Employment Summary

El Paso District of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) seeks qualified engineering assistants for an 8‑month rotation program that supports PE licensing. The role includes design, construction, and operations assignments under the supervision of licensed engineers.

Salary Plan / Grade
  • Engineering Assistant I: $51,158 – $81,351 (B20)
  • Engineering Assistant II: $54,278 – $87,046 (B21)

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in engineering design, drafting, and calculations for transportation projects.
  • Participate in construction inspection, material sampling, and testing.
  • Prepare and review plans, specifications, estimates (PS&E), and design documentation.
  • Support emergency and inclement‑weather operations as needed.
  • Engage in job‑rotation training, continuing education, and skill development.
  • Perform field investigations, surveying, and research activities.
  • Assist in program coordination and documentation of engineering tasks.
Responsibilities – Engineering Assistant II (Additional)
  • Carry out advanced and specialized design work.
  • Mentor junior engineering assistants, specialists, and technicians.
Essential Competencies – Engineering Assistant I
  • Knowledge of transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals.
  • Understanding of plans, specifications, and estimate preparation.
  • Computer‑aided drafting and design (CADD) skills.
  • Ability to apply engineering fundamentals, research, and analysis methodologies.
  • Reading and interpreting plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps.
  • Perform calculations using algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Analytical data organization and decision‑making skills.
Additional Competencies – Engineering Assistant II
  • Comprehensive knowledge of highway/bridge construction and maintenance materials.
  • Design review and advanced drafting capabilities.
  • Proficiency in cost estimation (materials, labor, expenses).
Experience & Qualifications
  • Graduated or scheduled to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or equivalent) by May 2026.
  • Master’s or Doctoral degree may substitute for the bachelor’s requirement.
  • Engineering Assistant I:
    No prior work experience required.
  • Engineering Assistant II:
    Minimum 1 year of engineering‑related experience.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license; may need to drive departmental vehicle.
  • Commitment to complete the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program and sign the Program Agreement.
Physical Requirements & Conditions
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Exposure to noise, moving vehicles, heat, chemicals, and other hazards.
  • Must wear protective gear.
  • Light lifting up to 20 lbs; frequent 10‑lb lifts.
  • Ability to walk, stand, crouch, and use hands for repetitive motion.
