Responsibilities
- Ambulate patients
- Obtain patient weight
- Give patient baths, oral care and hair care
- Take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressures)
- Collect I & O information
- Assist with activities in patient mobility and positioning
- Clearly and concisely report significant patient status changes to nurse
- Report significant patient status changes to appropriate co-workers
- Collection of urine and fecal specimens
- Obtain accu-check readings
- Initiate CPR
- Provide positive and effective interaction with patients, significant others, and other health team members, while maintaining standards of professional nursing
- Provide for patient safety, transport patients by pushing, pulling, lifting, in a wheelchair, bed, cart or Geri chair
- Reposition patients with or without mechanical devices, by lifting, pulling and pushing
- Responsible and accountable for using work time organizing and prioritizing work to complete daily assignments
- Participates in quality assurance, assessment and improvement activities
- Follows patient-specific plan of care
- Document patient information
- Provide patient meals and assist patient as needed with meals
- Follow all infection control procedures and policies (including use of standard precautions)
- Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Will be oriented to and maintain competence in working with patients in the following age categories:
Med/Surg/Skilled/ICU:
Infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
OB:
Neonate, adolescent, and adult patients
OR, ED:
Neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
TLC:
Adult and geriatric patients
Competence at the beginning of employment will be measured through observation during orientation and review of documentation. Ongoing competence will be measured through observation of clinical practice, observation for performance evaluation, and competency in-service. See attached sheet for other initial and ongoing competence required by each department.
Physical DemandsJob can demand constant walking. Sitting may be required occasionally, as well as frequent standing. Occasionally the job requires lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs. May also require pushing and pulling up to 35 lbs. Job requires full range of body motion, with occasional twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and reaching. Job may require reaching overhead. Job requires ability to handle and lift patients.
Eye-hand coordination, and finger and manual dexterity are required. Requires corrected hearing and vision to a normal range. Job requires working under stressful conditions and/or irregular hours. Some exposure to communicable diseases, sharps, and hazardous material is anticipated. Job requires potential exposure to body fluids and radiation. Requires the ability to distinguish letters and symbols. Use of office equipment such as telephones, copying machines, computers, fax machines, pagers, and intercoms may be required.
Repetitive movements such as writing are required.
Includes working weekends and holidays, with potential for varied shifts, overtime, cost containment absent days, or standby time.
